Problems with mail in iOS 9

I have updated my iPad generation 4 to iOS 9. First the iPad froze when it updated to the OS, I had to press and hold down both buttons for a few seconds in order to restart the iPad.

I have now discovered that the contents of all of my email are missing, the emails are still there but they lack content, it only says "The letter has not been downloaded from the server." The contents of the e-mail is visible the first time I open them, but the next time the content is gone.

How do I recover the contents of my email?

Check your email account settings on your computer under "Advanced", the setting "delete copys from the server after the message has been fetched" is it set to "Direct" or "After a day", set it on "when it has been moved from the Inbox" (option "Never" does not exist).

As long as the message is left on the server, the content remains in the e-mail on your iOS9 unit.

It has to not only still be on the server, it has to be on the server, in the inbox, and you have to be connected!

The iOS9 mail app does not store the mail properly on the device, especially any images & often even just plain text, so you have to keep your server-inbox all cluttered up with anything you might want to read later, even if it's just "later today". IOW it is no longer the d/l & read off-line mail client we have been using for years.

This started with iOS9, so it's something somebody did/botched in the coding.

Doesn't work either.

I don't know what the "archive" folder is supposed to be in POP, but it doesn't do anything more than the inbox does.

And it's only there if I've done settings-mail-move deleted messages to...trash/archive; then an archive folder appears, but I have to then go back to sending deleted messages to trash or I can't just *delete* something.

Whatever Apple did in iOS-9 they screwed up the mail app, which was working just fine for years.

quidam - truly sorry to hear that your problems are back.

Let's be clear though - this is not a server issue! The issue lies squarely with some devices that have IOS9> installed.

Fingers crossed that Apple are listening to the how ever many of their customers that are complaining and come up with a fix soon. Meanwhile, customers who are experiencing issues with "Problems with Mail in iOS 9" continue to employ workaround fixes.

Hello everybody, I´m writing from Germany!

I work with iOS 9.2 Beta since Saturday, 07/11/15! It seems that this issue is fixed in this beta version, although Apple does not describe this explicitly (as if
nothing had happened)! All emails incl. attachments (downloaded with POP) are still present and legible, regardless of which folder they have been moved in (archive, trash, etc.). Search functions also work properly. The old e-mails unfortunately are gone over forever. So who does not want to wait for the new official iOS, in my opinion can try it with iOS 9.2 beta, if you can obtain it (had read that you are not able to get it in Australia for example).

Good luck! 😉

Thanks for this new info - sounds really promising.

Can you confirm that locally downloaded/stored email messages, including graphic and/or attachment content, remains visible and accessible whithin the email application while the network connection is either diisabled or otherwise unavailable (i.e., totally off-line)? Similarly, whilst no connection to the mail server is available, do messages remain visible after completely closing the email application and restarting it?

IF the answer is yes in both cases, then the problem may have been resolved.
