Problems with mail in iOS 9

I have updated my iPad generation 4 to iOS 9. First the iPad froze when it updated to the OS, I had to press and hold down both buttons for a few seconds in order to restart the iPad.

I have now discovered that the contents of all of my email are missing, the emails are still there but they lack content, it only says "The letter has not been downloaded from the server." The contents of the e-mail is visible the first time I open them, but the next time the content is gone.

How do I recover the contents of my email?

I'm sure that Philly Phan is perfectly capable of defending him/herself. Do you really need to jump to his/her defence every time that someone outs his/her behaviour? But then again, I forgot this isn't really a problem is it, or it's only a problem that a few users have.

I too hold out little hope regarding comments made by Apple Support. A fix is long overdue.

It may be that TalkTalk users are also experiencing an issue and it may or may not be a coincidence, but please be under no illusion that issue did not exist prior to the release of IOS9.

iDevices running IOS8 (and earlier versions) are handling Mail exactly as they always have and are expected. iDevices running IOS9 accessing the same email accounts are screwed up.

There are numerous other threads (I counted at least 8) on this forum all on this topic. Other users also report the same issue with IMAP accounts.

You may be coorect and it maybe there is a problem with software utilised by different providers - as it is there is no statement from Apple, so we can only guess. Although, if that were the case, wouldn't they be pretty quick to point the finger?

Workarounds and hope are all many users have currently.

I do not believe it is anything specific to TalkTalk. Spoke to Apple yet again two days ago re my original case reference I had raised a few weeks ago (Apple NEVER bother following up or taking ownership of my complaints/issues despite the happy-clappy super positive style conversations I always get when I raise an issue for first time - very poor indeed)... in short, despite it being acknowledged as an "emerging issue" a long while ago, there is no indication when it will be addressed. The senior advisor I spoke to had no indication that iOS 9.2 would be addressing the issue either.

My confidence with Apple has been progressively eroded over the last couple of years - bug-ridden iOS updates in particular have caused me great anguish and loss of data on more than one occasion. Something has gone very bad in their coding division. Too see problems arise with poorly tested iOS updates is unacceptable - to see previous functionality being lost due to an update (in other words - accidentally removed from previous iOS) is appalling for a company of this stature.

I Have noticed one thing with this message error. I have two different email addresses and this error is only happening on one of my emails and it's a sub account to the main email address that it's happening to. My to regular email addresses don't have the issue. It's just the sub account that gets this error and it happens with ALL sent emails. Hope this helps someone

Yup...me too..I am forced to shut down my mail program NUMEROUS times a day...which is THE WORST when that is you main form of communication with clients. Not only that but the mail program takes a dive into a deep ditch every time I hit the 'attach' button...PLEASE PLEASE APPLE fix this...you're killing me right now (haha)...but seriously ....frick...worst!

After updating to iOS9, my mail wouldn't send...?? Receiving worked just fine... I deleted the account (IMAP) added it back as new (several times) same result... Finely... I found that when I added the account back in, it pulled some legacy info from a previous installation (that had a different password for the Send function) and even though I deleted the main account, and then recreated it... it was still pulling that bogus password back from a past setup... Going into the settings, I was finely able to see the the send function had a much longer password, and when I changed it to match the receive (and current) everything started to work correctly!! TaDa! Why Apple doesn't correct their Mail app to clear all the stored password data and create a new set when the new account is set up is beyond me, but that was clearly what was... and still is going on... Now I'm happy... again! Cheers!!

Fixing an issue that caused mail attachments to be inaccessible for some users with POP email accounts

3 Months plus and a sentence which by no means accurately describes the issue tucked in the middle of a long list of ***** ups.

Very poor Apple, very poor!

Hey well, maybe all the Devotees that deny issues exist will in future just stay quiet. After all, how can they fix an issue if it don't exist.

Which issue? - Good question.

I don’t use Siri, but if I did I imagine this is how my conversation would go.

“Hey Siri, good morning What’s up with my iPad?”

“Why?”

“What time is it?”

“Sorry, can’t answer that - we are in DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME TRANSITION”

“So how come my alarm didn’t go off this morning?”

“Sorry, can’t answer that - but IOS was updated overnight”

“Oh, How’s my heart rate this morning?”

“Sorry, can’t answer that - no data in HEALTH”

“What appointments do I have this week?”

“Sorry, can’t answer that - CALENDAR will not display seven days in a week”

“OK, can you call the office and find out please?”

“Sorry, can’t do that - search in CONTACTS displays no results”

“OK, so I must have some notifications from WALLET and LOCK SCREEN”

“Sorry - no”

“OK, so where’s my iPhone, that’ll tell me”

“Sorry - can’t log in to FIND MY IPHONE”

“OK, don’t worry I found it. Hey where’s my ICLOUD backup?”

“Sorry - known issue, waiting for next software release”

“OK, don’t worry”

“Sorry - I don’t understand that question”

“Where have all my LIVE PHOTOS gone?”

“Sorry - ICLOUD backup was incomplete so restored from previous backup, it turns off LIVE PHOTOS”

“OK, don’t worry. Let’s take a ‘good morning’ video to send to my beloved”

“Sorry - CAMERA app on iPad may mean you have a black screen”

“OK, don’t worry I’ll send a MAIL instead”

“Sorry - probably best to avoid the MAIL app for a variety of reasons”

“OK, don’t worry I’ll write a letter instead and print it”

“Sorry - at least 4 issues with KEYBOARD responsiveness and operation”

“OK, don’t worry I’ll dictate a voice message instead”

“Sorry - ACCESSIBILITY seems to have a few problems”

“OK, don’t worry. Let’s take a break. What’s going on in the world today? Bring up Safari”

“Sorry - SAFARI stability not very good”

“OK, don’t worry I’ll listen to my podcast”

“Sorry - PODCASTS stability not very good”

“OK, listen. The day hasn’t got off to a very good start has it?”

“Sorry”

“OK, don’t worry. What does work?”

“Ah, the NEWS app is great it allows you to stay up to date with the most important news of the day”

“OK, that sound great. Fire it up, what’s it got to say?”

“One moment please. You installed IOS9 so basically you have problems. But wait, there’s good news!”

“OK, whats that?”

“Your other Tech comapny shares show significant increase”

“OK, that is good news”

“Sorry, wait there is more news…. IOS 9.2 is released”

"Aw ****!

Seems there are still issues. If you are following other threads, folks are reporting that it seems better, but still odd things going on. Thius maybe just mails that are hung over from 9.1.

I've ignored anything that maybe hanging over from 9.1 by basically deleting them so they exist nowhere except on my computer. Still following 9.2 install there's something weird....

Prior to installing 9.2 I had cleared out all folders on the iPad (Inbox, Sent, Trash, etc), there was nothing there. Nothing on the server either.

24hrs after installing 9.2 - my Trash (for a POP account) folder on the iPad has several hundred messages going back to early November. Not everything, just emails that were accessed on the iPad. Where have these been retrieved from? (Is this consequential to the way memory is being used/changed?)

I did notice that immediately after installing 9.2 and accessing the Mail app the "spinning wheel" for around 10 minutes, during which the mail app was unresponsive. I closed the app and restatred the device after which the Mail app seemed to function OK.

The messages cannot have been retrieved from the server, because my computer deletes all messages on download to my computer or when moved to Trash. I also periodically check the email server just to make sure everything is functioning correctly.

Missing content - Can't say that I've noticed any issues as yet, but still monitoring.

Ground Hog Day....

So for the 3rd time... 9.2 keeps repopulating the Trash folder with several hundred messages that were previously deleted and don't exist anywhere.

1) Again, I clear out the several hundred messages from Trash folder (both pre&post 9,2 email). I clear out the other folders too, (Inbox, Sent) - there's nothing. I manually check the server, there's nothing there. (Just as it should be)

2) Close the Mail APP and shut the lid on the iPad, plug it into a power supply

3) 10 hours later and check the Inbox - a few messages. Check the Trash folder- nothing.

4) Inbox - read the messages and delete them

5) Back to Trash and now besides the messages i just deleted - the several hundred messages are back again!

Where is the device "recovering" these messages from? They don't exist anywhere. This must be some coding error regarding memory, no?

Dec 11, 2015 12:47 AM in response to mariotheplumber

I Updated to 9.2 about 36 hours ago and there don't appear to be any issues - not lost ant email content yet. And I haven't had any dead emails resurrec.

REading the list of things fixed I can safely say that none of the items listed ever caused any problems for me except the email issue. Reading other people's posts it makes me wonder why on earth should some issues only affect some people? My email client code must be identical to yours and yet there are multiple variations in app behaviour.

why doesn't Apple separate bug fix roll outs from enhancements? I for one would have stayed with any previous version and apply bug fixes only. None of the upgrades since v7 have been of any interest in terms of functionality. I suppose it's just too difficult to manage.....

FInally - and this is my last post on this subject (unless something dire happens) - what wrong with the editor that allows either two capitals or no capital at the start of new lines (see above)?

Dec 11, 2015 8:47 AM in response to DavJam

I'm glad to hear 9.2 seems to be going well for someone!

The email fix (of a problem they don't even seem to have acknowledged exists/existed) is the only thing I'm really interested in -- the other "improvements" aren't something I care about.

I'm trying it out on a little-used iPad-Mini, I'm not updating my phone for a couple of days.

(In case of updating problems, which I have had in the past, I only do updates right after I've synced & backed up and when I can go right-away to the Apple Store for help.)

WRT the capitalizing problem -- I dunno; maybe auto-correct is "correcting" certain letter combinations? also, sometimes my keyboard get a bit of a sticky-shift-key (or my finger is a bit "slow on the upbeat"), no matter what I'm typing in (web-site, notepad, email....).
