Split Apple TV output between a regular TV and a projector

Hi,

I would like to split the Apple TV output to a projector and a regular TV. Can I use an HDMI splitter for this? Also, I have an ONKYO HT-R380 - how do I get the sound output on this while playing the content on projector via the HDMI. Currently, the optical out from regular TV is connected to the ONKYO HomeTheatre and many HDMI cable inputs from various devices are connected in to my regular TV.

Would really appreciate help

You should not need a separate Apple TV for each device

Most likely you would want all sources, including the Apple TV, going to your Onkyo receiver, then use an HDMI splitter to send the signal to either the TV or the projector (as your model of Onkyo has only one HDMI out). The receiver takes care of choosing the input for both sound and video. If the receiver can take audio from the HDMI cables, the neatest way is not to bother with a separate optical or coaxial audio cable for the audio signal. (My Onkyo NX525 does this)

The only issue I have found on my setup is that the Apple TV seems to have a problem switching resolutions between the 1080 of my projector and 720 of my TV. I am trying to resolve that one at the moment.

Do you want to play TV and projector at the same time?

Regarding sound, there are boxes that split the HDMI audio to optical (or even RCA), while forwarding the HDMI video to a TV or projector.

Be sure that whatever you select supports HDCP, or you won't be able to play copy-protected content (e.g. iTunes) through it. Be wary of devices that emphasize educational use only.
