Mailboxes and iOS9 issue

Hi,

Last week I updated my iPhone 6 to iOS 9 and started having the following problem with my primary POP account.

Will download email (entire email, including attachments) to my phone and at some point then download the same email to my computer (MBP, MS Outlook). Outlook is set to delete messages from the mail server once downloaded to my computer. I have been doing this since my first iPhone (March 2011) and have never had a problem until last week.

After updating the iOS, the content of the messages that I have left on my phone disappear within a couple of hours of being downloaded to my computer. I get the following message: This message has not been downloaded from the server. I have checked the mailbox account settings and nothing seems to have been changed from where they where prior to the update.

This problem only shows up on emails left on my phone from the last 30 days or so. I have earlier messages from March, 2015 and before that the contents have not been deleted. Very weird and frustrating.

Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks.

iPhone 6, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

This is ridiculous. I have resent e-mails to myself that had the error of "This message has not been downloaded from the server", they show up with the entire e-mail message for a day then I go back in the next day and receive that error. I have important e-mails that I save on my phone for traveling but now they are rendered useless. I have looked all over the place for a fix but all I find are IMAP/POP suggestions. I didn't change a single setting in my mail app yet once I upgraded to IOS 9 this issue started.

Reverting to iOS8.4 is not an option as that's not available.

Try this from a post by Vrago:

OK, actually I did what was referred to in LadyGatr's post above.

FYI, I use my pop account to look at incoming mail while I am out in the field during the day, and then have everything go to Outlook Mail on my mac (my master mail copy) when I connect the mac. If you are doing something else, this may not be good for you.

Specifically, here is what I did to resolve the problem :

Go to Settings: -> Mail Contacts, Calendar

Under accounts, click on the pop account that isn't working (i.e. the account got somehow turned into IMAP by ios 9.0.2). This takes you to the IMAP screen. Mail will be 'on', toggle it off. When you return to Mail accounts screen, your pop account should show inactive.

then click 'Add Account' and select your account type from the list- mine is 'other'.

Under Other, select 'add mail account'.

Enter your name, then under email and password enter something gobbledygook that you know won't work for these two entries, and then select Next. It will say something like 'looking up account' and 'verifying', and then 'cannot get mail' pops up. Hit OK. Then at the top right you will see the button you need to make it POP instead of IMAP. Click that and then scroll down and correct the email address and password for your pop account. Then hit next.

As soon as I did that, my mail started coming in correctly. Somehow it figured out all the other settings for my ISP mail server.

Hope this helps.

I lost all my old mail on the phone, but at least I can get the new mail on the iphone and go back to my Mac Outlook for anything old I need. Better than a useless mail app in the phone.

No, unfortunately when I woke up this morning the emails started disappearing again. So now I'm forced to set all of my devices to never delete from the server unless/until I delete from the device and I'll have to manually delete from the server as well as downloading to each device.

All,

Sorry to dash your hopes but very early in in this iOS 9 pop issue I deleted one of my accounts, went to the BT email settings page (uk email provider) and setup the account from scratch using the "incorrect password" trick to allow the selection of pop vice imap. You will not be surprised to learn that after 24 hours emails started to be replaced by the dreaded "cannot download" message.

Several of you have found ldygatr's post suggesting a fix - on one thread I asked how how it had gone after a day or so and her response is posted above. No fix, same as me. Those of you going down the route of deleting and re-setting up I would ask you to 1. Ensure you have set as pop not imap before posting it as a successful solution and 2. You wait 24 hours before posting it as a success. It's bad enough already without us spoofing each other into chicken bones/ ritual sacrifice solutions that sometimes do more damage than good. We need to be precise with our feedback and produce evidence based responses to Apple to aid / speed the solution.

the Forbes articles suggestion that we are in for a long wait before 9.1 is not good news.

Will 616,

LdyGatr's solution I implemented is still working after 2 days.

One thing that may be different from others' discussions of their actions: I left the IMAP account on the phone (turned mail off so it shows as inactive) and then created an additional new POP account using the gibberish email solution.

I too tried LdyGatr's but had to delete the IMAP account before I could create a new POP account. I first disabled the IMAP account so it showed as inactive but when I entered the correct username/password for a new POP account I got a dialogue saying that an account for that user was already created on the phone. I was unable to continue until the IMAP account was deleted. Then I successfully created a new POP account but lost messages after roughly 15 hours. It sounds like you are in good shape and I hope it lasts for you!

I'd be glad to tell you whatever you would like to know.

It is a POP account, settings I can see other than my identifying info are:

Incoming mail from my isp's pop server: Use SSL on, password authentication, delete from server-never, S/MIME off.

Outgoing: Use SSL on, password authentication.

If there is anything else you think might help you, let me know.

All,

According the the press release announcing the release of iOS 9.1, among the many fixes and improvements was the fixing of the POP mail account that effected us. Hoping this fix, resolves the issue. Fingers crossed.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my original post with solutions, suggestions and observations.

Have a great day.

I've held off replying until I have given sufficient time post the 9.1 update to confirm it is clear. Here are my observations:

1. We have updated an iPhone 6, iPhone 5c iPad 3 and iPad Air 2 To 9.1. All were exhibiting identical symptoms post upgrade to iOS 9. All our email accounts are pop.

2. I have had iOS 9.1 running on my iPhone 6 since last night. All emails that I have received today are still present. There have been no cases of "this message has not been downloaded from the server" in any of the emails received post update.

3. Unsurprisingly older messages already affected have not been recovered.

4. I noticed a lag when opening emails with graphics or pictures. When I select airplane mode the email text is unaffected but the pictures are not shown, only the empty frame placeholder. It appears that data is being used to download these images (from where? More to follow).

5. Attachments such as PDFs are not affected by lack of a data service (good news) so whilst it's not pretty, pop emails are once again functional when off the grid (important for me in a rural area).

6. When I got home I downloaded today's emails to the computer, which removes them from the email provider server. All of today's emails were still accessible despite the original no longer being present in the email provider server or any of the folders. I even turned the iMac off so there could be no weird back channel to the only other version of the email.

7. When I select airplane mode the pictures in emails still disappear, when I select airplane mode off the pictures reappear with a slight data usage (difficult to attribute categorically) where is this data being cached???

In summary - based on a sample of one uk email provider (BT) and 4 iOS devices pop/smttp email is functional again on iOS 9.1. Text and attachments appear to remain on the device even when data connection is lost and the email is no longer available on the server. Something has definitely changed and it's certainly not pretty reference images and graphics. I'm also a little concerned that my email is being stored in another location. So good news with caveats - Apple still have work to do. I will be using the feedback page again to highlight my remaining concerns. A) why is it so hard to set up a pop account b) why isnt the whole email downloaded and retained until I delete it - it's my storage and my data plan, I should have control and decide how I use it!

Sorry, but I don't know what you mean by transport.

I posted shortly after installing 9.0 on my iPhone 6, that my emails would randomly disappear after reading them. Since then I have been receiving Community emails about others having the same problem, with many suggestions on how to fix it, none of which worked.

My computer and my phone are both set up to use a POP account from the internet / cable provider, Optimum.
