Mailboxes and iOS9 issue

Hi,

Last week I updated my iPhone 6 to iOS 9 and started having the following problem with my primary POP account.

Will download email (entire email, including attachments) to my phone and at some point then download the same email to my computer (MBP, MS Outlook). Outlook is set to delete messages from the mail server once downloaded to my computer. I have been doing this since my first iPhone (March 2011) and have never had a problem until last week.

After updating the iOS, the content of the messages that I have left on my phone disappear within a couple of hours of being downloaded to my computer. I get the following message: This message has not been downloaded from the server. I have checked the mailbox account settings and nothing seems to have been changed from where they where prior to the update.

This problem only shows up on emails left on my phone from the last 30 days or so. I have earlier messages from March, 2015 and before that the contents have not been deleted. Very weird and frustrating.

Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks.

iPhone 6, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

This is ridiculous. I have resent e-mails to myself that had the error of "This message has not been downloaded from the server", they show up with the entire e-mail message for a day then I go back in the next day and receive that error. I have important e-mails that I save on my phone for traveling but now they are rendered useless. I have looked all over the place for a fix but all I find are IMAP/POP suggestions. I didn't change a single setting in my mail app yet once I upgraded to IOS 9 this issue started.

I have the same problem after the updates. I can see the pop email account once and then when I go back to it later, the content disappeared claiming it can't be downloaded from the server. I spoke to Apple and they wanted to change my account settings to IMAP. Before I did that, I contacted Earthlink my internet provider and they said that they support both pop server accounts and IMAP server accounts, but the problem is that once I delete an email from my iPhone, I can't get it on my desktop, although I have it sent to save emails on the server. Because of this, I have to wait until Apple fixes the pop email problem.

I had the same problem and I was able to fix it. Apple removed the POP email option in their software with the latest release of their operating systems - both OS X and iOS. Nevertheless, there is a backdoor way in Apple's software to set up a pop email account that works on OS X El Capitan Version 10.11.1 and on iOS 9.1. Remember, if you have even one device with an IMAP email account and delete emails with that device, you will delete those emails on your ISP's server and your other devices will not be able to get those emails. In other words, if you share an email account with multiple devices and all of the devices have IMAP email accounts, you will have a mess on your hands with one device deleting emails and your other devices not getting those emails.

We had this problem when my husband deleted emails on his new iPhone 6s thinking that they were only getting deleted locally on his iPhone and not on our ISP's server. He set up his email using IMAP as there was no other choice. Needless to say, I was very upset because I never got to read the emails on my device that he deleted on his device. I had a **** of a time figuring out how to change his email on his iPhone to a POP account. Nevertheless, I figured it out! The instructions are below.

Remember, it is important to set up ALL of your devices (iPhone, iPads, MACs, etc.) that access the same email account as POP accounts. Consequently, below are instructions for changing to POP accounts on both OS X and on iOS. Good luck!

Here is how to set up a POP email account on OS X El Capitan Version 10.11.1:

(1) Go to the MAIL program and click on MAIL in the horizontal top menu bar and select ADD ACCOUNT.

(2) Choose OTHER MAIL ACCOUNT for your provider.

(3) HERE IS THE TRICK: The next step asks you to enter NAME, EMAIL ADDRESS, and PASSWORD. For EMAIL ADDRESS, put an invalid email address such as kjfdkjdkj@kdjk.com. For PASSWORD, just type in anything, like klkdkjkle.

(4) Now, you will see a screen to correct the invalid email address. First, correct the EMAIL ADDRESS, USER NAME, and PASSWORD. Under ACCOUNT TYPE, notice that you now have an option to change your email account from IMAP to POP. The default is IMAP, so toggle to POP. Then, for INCOMING MAIL SERVER and OUTGOING MAIL SERVER, follow your ISP's instructions for what to type in those fields.

Here is how to set up a POP email account on iOS 9.1:

(1) Go to SETTINGS on your iOS device. Then, select MAIL, CONTACTS, CALENDARS.

(2) Select ADD ACCOUNT.

(3) Select OTHER for your email provider.

(4) Select ADD MAIL ACCOUNT.

(5) HERE IS THE TRICK: The next step asks you to enter NAME, EMAIL, PASSWORD, and DESCRIPTION. For EMAIL, put an invalid email address such as kjfdkjdkj@kdjk.com. For PASSWORD, just type in anything, like klkdkjkle.

(6) On the next screen, you get a choice to have an IMAP or POP account in the blocks on the top of the screen. Select the POP block.

(7) Now fill out the correct information with NAME, EMAIL, DESCRIPTION. Don't forget to fill out the information on the incoming and outgoing mail server information as instructed by your ISP.

I hope this helps!

I deleted and recreated my POP email account running iOS9.1. There has been no change and messages are still disappearing after 24 hours and being replaced by the message not downloaded from the server text. None of my devices have IMAP. All use POP and our server is a POP server with IMAP service disabled. So, hate to rain on the parade but what you propose is not a cure. Give it 48+ hours and you'll see. Sorry.

This is what I did, as it was suggested earlier. I believe you will shortly see that the message content on your iphone when you select a message from the mail app will be replaced by 'message not downloaded from server'. You will still see the first part of the content in the message preview.

If this does not occur after a day or so, please report back with any other parameters you may have also changed on your iphone.

Thanks.

Since I started this discussion originally I thought I would add an update, though from your list you probably already know this. I have been through all of the email on my iPad, going back over a year of saved emails, an found a large number of them with that meaasge. It almost feels like my emails were searched and any that met certain criteria were nuked.

Another weird thing I noticed in going back through my emails is some of them appeared twice.

With all the people having this problem you would think Apple would have gotten right on it. Hopefully they will have itr fixed soon.

Hello everybody, I´m writing from Germany!

I work with iOS 9.2 Beta since Saturday, 07/11/15! It seems that this issue is fixed in this beta version, although Apple does not describe this explicitly (as if
nothing had happened)! All emails incl. attachments (downloaded with POP) are still present and legible, regardless of which folder they have been moved in (archive, trash, etc.). Search functions also work properly. The old e-mails unfortunately are gone over forever. So who does not want to wait for the new official iOS, in my opinion can try it with iOS 9.2 beta, if you can obtain it (had read that you are not able to get it in Australia for example).

Good luck! 😉

I waited until v 9.1 to upgrade to iOS9, thinking that the kinks would finally be worked out, and I quickly discovered the POP email problem. Looking for a solution, I found this thread and took Will616's advice to submit a feedback form. Then I stopped at the Apple store and spoke with an Apple Genius about the problem. I was hoping that they could a) escalate the problem and b) help me restore iOS8 until it's fixed, but found that neither is possible.

Once I convinced my Genius that the problem was not with my email provider and was, in fact, a hot topic on the Apple message board, she went in the back room to consult with the other Geniuses. When she returned she suggested that I switch to IMAP because "POP is a 25 year old technology." She was probably just parroting back the opinion of the other Geniuses who can't understand why anyone would want to store their own emails rather than leaving them on a server somewhere, but it made me wonder if it's an open secret at Apple that they're dropping support of POP. Either way, I found it disturbing.

Next I contacted my email provider (a local web hosting company) to see what they knew. The tech that I spoke with wasn't aware of the problem, but he did some searching while we talked and found the problem mentioned in several tech blogs. That made me feel a little better because the only way Apple will consider addressing this is if they get a lot of complaints or bad press.

Gunsch66's post gave me hope and I'll keep my fingers crossed for v 9.2, but I'm wondering if this is a problem with the OSX as well and I don't want to risk spreading the bug to my laptop. Does anyone have experience using POP after upgrading to El Capitan?

Nov 10, 2015 8:42 AM in response to elsie222

It is the email providers who are leading the change to IMAP, Pop still works as it always did for me (POP provider is Squirrel, Domain is my own) ElCap set my POP account up correctly, but then my provider only supports POP so there were no alternative settings for Mail to use.

The auto setup merely queries the provider as to what settings to use, if IMAP is the default at the provider, Mail will do as it is told.
