20,000 unread gmail emails on iPhone ???

Upgraded to iOS 9 on iPhone & iPad now I have 20,000 unread gmail emails???

Is there anyway to get rid of them?

i Tried rebooting my iPhone 3 times and deleted and "re"added the gmail account twice but it just went back to massive unread emails.

when I got home from work I checked my iPad and that also has the 20k unread messages?

I Appreciate any help you can offer!

thanks

I Forgot to mention that I have tried clicking mark all as read/unread many times and the weird thiing is that sometimes the gmail unread count goes to zero while the "all mail" unread email count remains.

evenutally the gmail count goes back up.

weird, but I think it started when I searched for an email and now it won't correct itself?

thanks.

I found that this issue will crop up with POP accounts. If you enter your POP accounts' inbox, and then keep scrolling down....ALL the way down.....it will start loading "unread" emails. You will unfortunately have to keep doing this until all of the "unread" emails are loaded.

THEN you can use the Edit -> Mark All -> Mark as Read action to clear the unread message counter.

The problem is that with POP accounts, there is no communication to the server that you have read an email on your mobile device, so your iPhone thinks that all of the messages are unread. It will show the entire inbox as unread in the counter, even though it hasn't loaded all of those emails on to your phone. You must get them loaded before you can mark them as read.
