iTunes freezes 3-5 seconds after launching and goes into not responding mod

Hello. Everything was working fine until yesterday when my iTunes decided to freeze 3-5 seconds after i attempted to access it. You can move around in the playlist for those 3-5 seconds before it freezes. I get no error message, but in the task manager it reads "not responding." Everything else on my computer works fine, even while iTunes is frozen (although sometimes the cursor will not go all the way to the menu bar when iTunes has frozen). I initially tried restarting the computer over and over again with no luck.

I called Apple customer support and they had never heard of this problem (despite several posts i found on this discussion forum (with no solutions)). They had me try a few minor things on the phone, shutting off this and choosing repair for that, all to no avail. They then advised me to uninstall iTunes and quicktime which i did, then reinstalling both. Still no luck. I then installed the quicktime independent stand alone player. Still no luck. I then went to MSConfig and disabled everything per Apple's suggestion. Still no luck. I've now tried all of the recommendations on Apple's troubleshooting guide.

Has anyone been able to solve this problem?

Pardon me please if thsi is the wrong place to post this. I am recovering form a series of surgeries and am in pain, and have struggled to find the answer to my question. I am posting this from a PC (ugh) but my problem is with Itunes on my Mac Powerbook G$. Mine freezes as soon as I try to import a CD to my Mac. It starts to import and the thermometer at the top of the screen starts up and then freezes. This happens with every CD I have tried. I have to force quit Itunes. I have not ever subscribed to a podcast. I have also tried to reinstall Itunes but am unable to do it. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? I need my Ipod music to help me endure my pain.

I just bought a new iPod and of course iTunes had me upgrade to 7.0.2 as well. I plugged the iPod in and left and it froze. I kept trying to get it to synch and it kept freezing. I checked the iPod and found that no music had synched, but actually Podcasts had. That was strange. I then found that each time I plugged the iPod in, it would begin synching and after a few minutes (usually 30 songs) it would freeze again.

I came on to these discussions and with many of your ideas (thank you!!) I was able to turn off podcast automatic loading. However it still froze. I noticed it happening when synching iCal, so I turned that updating off. Then it froze again when it got around to updating Contacts, so I force quit and restarted iTunes and the iPod and stopped the auto-updating of Contacts too!!

Now it is finally loading my new iPod with music - slowly dang USB - but steadily. I did get a window briefly that said I would need to synch contacts with iSynch manually. Oh well.

So it looks like iTunes 7.0.2 has bugs with all three - podcasts, iCal and Contacts updates. So if one doesn't work and you still get frozen, try all three, and request Apple to fix this soon otherwise what is the point!!

mine is doing the exact same thing. every time that i try to upload a CD to my iTunes, it will show all of the song titles and say that it's about to start downloading, and then it just freezed up. also, whenever it freezes, i can't even end iTunes in the task manager window. when i try to "end task," it just says that it's not responding, and then i ultimately have to just hold down the power button on my laptop until the system turns off. if anybody could help me with this then that would be awesome. also if anybody that can help could e-mail me about how i can fix this, then that would be great! There is something else you can try. I recently experienced the same problem. I keep all of my songs on an external drive. My external drive somehow was turned off and iTunes could not find the hard drive and listing of songs. You would think it would give a friendly message stating it could not find the drive but instead it provided me with the same symptons listed above. The software simply froze and became unresponsive. Once I turned the drive on, redirected the software to the correct folder using the preferences menu, everything worked fine. There is a chance that by upgrading, iTunes loses the path and thus gets confused. Check the preferences, make sure it is pointing to the correct location and reset if necessary.
Has anyone been able to solve this problem?

Hi, Mine does the exact same thing! Sometimes it works, but if I have it up too long, it freezes again. Somehow, I found some updates on this website, and that worked but my iTunes hasn't worked in a few days. I can't find those updates anymore. I don't remember what I did, but I hope to find them! I keep getting iTunes giftcards, but right now I can't use them! If I uninstall, then re-install(tried before) will I lose my library because I haven't backed my songs up? Please reply!

I also have a Powerbook G4 and am having the same problems since upgrading to 7.0.2 - I get the ****** spinning beachball as soon as it tries to update podcasts, (I too subscribed to Jim Cramer's podccasts and video podcast, as well as a few others - see above).

I also can not upload CD's. I'm having to rebuild a 200 CD library since Apple told me my old firewire iPod could not be salvaged after it got yanked during a sychronization process, and I had half of my collection on the iPod only (since the original G4 hardrive was only 20 gigs).

All I can say is good luck GerryR, sorry about your predicament. Perhaps Apple will listen to it's LONG TIME owners and fan base and fix this soon.

I have been having trouble with iTunes as well. I can understand the store being down due to high volume and Christmas sales, but my iTunes software problems (unrelated to the store) have been ridiculous. I have an iPod mini and have used it with no issues for a couple years, but I got a new iPod video for Christmas today and suddenly iTunes started freezing when I tried to sync it. The first time I set it up it worked fine but then all **** broke loose.

First, I uninstalled version 7.01.16 or whatever (the newest one) and installed version 6.05, but discovered that it wouldn't work with my new iPod. So don't try that. Older generation iPods can try it, though. Here's the link for old applications of iTunes:

http://www.oldapps.com/itunes.htm

What ended up finally working for me was uninstalling the new version, reinstalling it, and restoring my new iPod. I disabled automatic syncing of photos AND of music. So now I have to manually install anything I put on the iPod but frankly as long as iTunes doesn't freeze every time I connect my iPod I don't care. I assume reinstallation won't be necessary but I did it anyway. The key is to do the restore before iTunes freezes, which was in about 15-20 seconds for me. It might be shorter for others so I recommend doing it ASAP.

I am hopeful (ha!) that soon the issue will get cleared up and I can switch back to automatic uploading of my iPod. For the time being, however, it works manually and I'm happy.

Good luck to everyone. It has been a frustrating day for me but I hope I have helped someone who's been as frustrated as me.

There is a problem with 7.0.2 running on older Powerbooks, but Apple is too busy getting their release pipeline ready for MacWorld Expo next year to fix it right now. Specifically, there appear to be problems synchronizing specific Podcasts (Jim Cramer's Real Money - a discontinued podcast, and Mad Money - his video podcast appear to be problems). It also can not import CDs anymore without locking up.

Since 7.0.2 is the only version that you can download from the website, you might try reloading an older version from CD/DVD if you have it (which is either with your original disks, or with your purchased version of iLife '05/'06).

Also, you can send feedback to Apple by selecting "iTunes-Provide iTune Feedback" from the iTunes menu bar. If you have problems with freezups, disconnect your internet conection first, then launch iTunes, then disable automatic podcasts update, then reconnect to internet. Perhaps if enough people submit feedback they'll fix it sooner, squeaky wheel and whatnot.

Cheers,
TexasRed
