iTunes freezes 3-5 seconds after launching and goes into not responding mod

Hello. Everything was working fine until yesterday when my iTunes decided to freeze 3-5 seconds after i attempted to access it. You can move around in the playlist for those 3-5 seconds before it freezes. I get no error message, but in the task manager it reads "not responding." Everything else on my computer works fine, even while iTunes is frozen (although sometimes the cursor will not go all the way to the menu bar when iTunes has frozen). I initially tried restarting the computer over and over again with no luck.

I called Apple customer support and they had never heard of this problem (despite several posts i found on this discussion forum (with no solutions)). They had me try a few minor things on the phone, shutting off this and choosing repair for that, all to no avail. They then advised me to uninstall iTunes and quicktime which i did, then reinstalling both. Still no luck. I then installed the quicktime independent stand alone player. Still no luck. I then went to MSConfig and disabled everything per Apple's suggestion. Still no luck. I've now tried all of the recommendations on Apple's troubleshooting guide.

Has anyone been able to solve this problem?

Maybe this is the same thing that you are dealing with. Every other time I try to import a CD, iTUnes freezes and had to do a cold reboot of the PC. However, there is good news......It seems that the file mmjb.exe is causing the problem . So if you run into this go into windows task manager (sorry mac folks), go into the process tab, highlight that file, and select End Process. That seems to unhang the application, or at least allow you to do another PC. I can't explain why this file is the culprit, but it seems related to the Autolaunch of CD's. I have also seen this file unhang the app when doing other things, too.

Hopefully this will help out. I have a total of about 6 hours of experience with iTunes and from what I have encountered so far, I am not impressed. Is there actual technical support for this, or is everything user/forum driven? Nothing like being your own tech support. Seems like there's a lot of problems with iTunes and not a lot of support.

I've seen a lot of discussions on many forums about iTunes freezing, but so far no solution that works, and no sign of any acknowledgment from Apple that there's even a problem.

Mine worked fine until I upgraded to the latest version of iTunes (V7.0.2) about a month ago. Now, when I attach my iPod via the USB lead it seems to go through all the "handshaking routine" and iTunes tells me the iPod is being updated, but after about a minute, the whole thing freezes.

As far as I can tell, nothing has been updated at all, and I have to close iTunes by killing it via Task Manager.

iTunes seems to work OK on its own (to play songs on my PC, for example) and my iPod works OK when it's playing music. It's just the updating that's a problem, and it seems now that I'll never be able to put anything else on it.

I've tried a number of solutions that I've found - all the obvious ones, including uninstalling and reinstalling, and setting up my preferences again, but nothing's fixed it.

Would reverting to the version if iTunes that came with my iPod help?

Are Apple aware of the problem?

Is anyone else getting the same symptoms, and like, me having problems fixing it?

Apple's idea of service and support seems to be this "self-help" forum, and given that owning an iPod is my only experience of them as a company, I have to say, I'm not impressed.

First, I uninstalled version 7.01.16 or whatever (the
newest one) and installed version 6.05, but
discovered that it wouldn't work with my new iPod. So
don't try that. Older generation iPods can try it,
though. Here's the link for old applications of
iTunes:

OK - tried that, but get an error on startup - itunes.itl created by a newer version of iTunes. Much as I expected, I have to say... now what...?

You need to retreive you V6 library from the Previous iTunes Libraries folder.

A backup should have been made when you first upgraded to V7, the filename should include this date.

Just drag your iTunes Library.itl file out of the iTunes folder to your desktop, then copy the backup file to your iTunes directory and rename it iTunes Libary.itl.

You may need to reauthorize your computer so check to see if a purchased track plays.

Obviously you will lose any changes to your library since you upgraded.

okay so it seems that most people who have a dell computer are experiencing this same problem. i have also had the SAME issues with updating, freezing, etc. the problem is MUSICMATCH Jukebox. it usually comes with every dell computer and there is a file that runs through MUSICMATCH that seems to mess with the operation of itunes. now, there are two solutions - one) you can go into your windows task manager. go to processes. and find mmjb.exe. highlight it and click "end process". when you click on this, your itunes should start working properly. but, the problem with this is that after a short while, mmjb will begin processing again and you will experience the same problem in your itunes. now, you could keep going into your w.t.m and erasing it from your processes but i think the easier solution is to erase MUSICMATCH entirely. you really should have no need for it since you are now using itunes. make sure you erase all components of the program because when i sent it to the recycling bin, there were still parts left on my computer that contain the file mmjb.exe. I did a search of musicmatch on my computer and found the other files and sent them to the recycling bin as well. I hope this helps you. I was EXTREMELY frustrated for the past several days, but now it has been exactly 3 hours since i deleted all of MUSICMATCH and there has been no problem with itunes. i'm not sure if mmjb.exe is a worm, but it also was slowing down my internet as well. so be careful.

I'm having the same problem. I've tried everything I can think of with no luck. De-installed, tried 7.0 & 7.0.1, created a new user account, turned off podcasts and it still freezes.

I saw a thread on "ilounge" that says it may be a bug w/ iTunes and NAS's. I am using a Maxtor Shared Storage NAS and have too many playlists to load directly from my machine. (I had no such issues w/ iTunes 6.x)

I am currently on hold, going on 1.5 hours, with Apple Support to see what they have to say - I may be returning my new 80G Video iPod, uninstalling iTunes completely and looking for an alternative...

I do have a dell and had MusicMatch installed. iTunes rendered it in-operable after I upgraded so I completely removed it (including my registry).

This has not helped me. So now I cannot use either due to iTunes 7.0.2 freezing issues.

I am now on 1 3/4 hours of being on hold w/ Apple Support... Is this standard customer service? People complain about microsoft, but I don't see the difference at this point.

Well, after 3 hours of crappy music-on-hold and still not getting through to support, I've decided to give up.

Not sure how you can hold on to your market share if the software to make your player work doesn't work...?

I will be taking my ipod back tomorrow and heading to Cnet to review my MP3 player options.

How exactly is Apple better than Microsoft? Not even their service is this bad.

This question has in no way been answered and should not be marked as such. There are too many of us having the same problem. Fortunatly, my 3rd generation 40GB iPod is still operational when not connected to iTunes so I still have music, but my brand new 30GB video sits empty and lonely. Apple, please address this situation and issue a fix! Think of all the people that dillegently bought and/or received a new iPod for x-mas. We have paid generously for a glorified paperweight. This could not have happened at a worse time for you....

I don't have a Dell.

I'm about to start day 2 of trying to get my iPod to work properly, but I don't have that much time to waste on it. There have been a couple of suggestions since my last post yesterday - thanks, I'm about to try them.

In the meantime, if anyone had any doubt about the widespread nature of this problem, they only need to look at the number of people who've viewed this thread - 17,000 plus - orders of magnitude bigger than most other threads. I reckon that should be telling Apple something.

SUCCESS!!! You Beauty, Polydorus!!

Backing out to V6.0.5 AND restoring the old library fixed it for me. I'm very grateful, but also feel vindicated in believing that my problems were all the fault of the iTunes upgrade, WHICH I SHALL NEVER DO AGAIN!!!!!

Apple - are you listening?

Unfortunately, this might not be an option for new users, because they won't have an old library file to fall back on, but if you have an oldish machine and your troubles started when you did what Apple told you to and upgraded to V7.0.2, the answer is here for you.

Now I can get on with my project to rip some vinyl!

agreed, I have read, and re-read this thread twice, and upon executing for 3+ hours, not one solution has worked for me.

I can tell you this, I will be returning this IPOD 80gb video and getting a Zune. I have had enough of proprietary software, and the lack of support for non-apple formats.

I have now spent 8+ hours of my life trying to resolve this, and I can't even get to the point to install files to the pod.

Apple you should be ashamed, marking this thread as answered, even though there is no markable solution or acknoledgement from your team.

This reiterates my thought that Apple is all about trend, and so much less about substance.
