Same here. iPad worked well under iOS 7, slow under iOS 8, very very slow under iOS 9 and 9.1.

I did change few settings as recommended in few places, like this one:

http://osxdaily.com/2015/09/18/slow-ios-9-speed-up-tips

Didn't help.

Then I have reset it, including wiping all data. Situation has improved, but it is still very slow, much slower than iOS 7.

I hope that apple are listening and that future updates will improve this.

If I could, I would revert to iOS 7.

well well well... i'm a bit desperate about what i read... my ipad is still very slow, it works properly and all of a sudden, it's terribly slow... I've reset all the settings and the problem is still here...

I cross my fingers for apple to be aware of that issue and propose another update that would correct that whole mess...

Anyway, thanks everyone for your replies and your help !

Speaking of reverting...

I finally gave in to the nag popups urging me to update my vintage Jan/2013 iPad to iOS9 from iOS7. While there are some improvements in accessibility features (I am visually impaired), the performance is pretty bad: apps slow to open, slow to load URLs, Safari crashes, etc). Seems to me that Apple shouldn't push an upgrade to a device it likely knows won't handle it.

Is there a way to revert to 7.1.2?

My iPad Air felt sluggish with iOS9.1. The worst of it was Safari. Scrolling in certain pages was abysmal.

One new thing of iOS 9 being Safari content blockers, I tried reloading "slow" pages without content blockers

... And it was suddenly fast again.

I Then disabled the content blocker I used (Purify) and switched to anether one, and my iPad feels quick again :-)

So, if any of you is using Safari content blockers, maybe you should try disabling them for a while, and see if your iPad feels better.

And have a great day too :-)

Were I a cynic then I would say that Apple has done this (made them incredibly slow) to older iPads on purpose - to get us to upgrade our old hardware.

Apple must offer a way to downgrade the iOS when they screw things up.

I now have a perfectly good iPad (pre-iOS 9) that is useless.

Has anyone had any luck with getting an iPad 4 back to working order?

I've been battling a slow iPad 2 since the iOS 9 upgrade. Just last night it occurred to me the lock-ups happen when receiving mail.

I had 5 email accounts loaded so this morning I removed first the G-Mail accounts and did a reboot and the thing works very well now. I did recreate one of the accounts and it starting locking-up again.

Not sure why this would make a difference but I had tried every single tip yo good folks put out there and none of those worked for me.

My iPad 2 was unusable. I switched to a still wallpaper which helped for a while after rebooting but then back to unusable. I noticed very strange behavior in the Notifications Centre with emails flashing up as if it was running through all the recent ones. After a few seconds it stopped. This happened often. Not sure what triggered it. I went into Settings->Notifications->Mail and turned off 'Show in Notification Centre' for all my email accounts.

This has fixed it. Still a bit laggy but definitely usable. I think the iPad was using all it's resources doing something strange with mail notifications. Note: I have got nearly 10,000 unread emails so it may be that this problem won't occur if you have less!

Hello All,

I have had the same iPad problem. IPad2 used with Pages every day. Suddenly almost unusable, a real problem if you are a writer!

I followed the instructions on this link first of all. http://osxdaily.com/2015/09/18/slow-ios-9-speed-up-tips/

It helped for a while but soon slowed down again.

Then I turned off all the notifications on every app, stopped iCloud sync for everything accept Pages. (I only use really use Pages on my iPad and have a iMac\iPhone for everything else so its not a big problem for me...but it does rather negate the reason for having an iPad in the first place)

Having done all of this, I deleated as many apps as I could that I do not often use....far to many to admit to....and then Hard Reset the iPad

REsult! The iPad now much faster than it was and nearly back to normal. However its nowhere near as useful anymore and I'm rather disappointed that Apple have not sorted it out themselves. I've yet to see any acknowledgement from them that there is even a problem.

I await iOS 9.2 to see if I can turn everything back on again witout Pafges becoming useless....

Hope this helps

My iPad was very sluggish particularly when using Safari. Turns out that JavaScript was causing the problem. I switched Javascript off through Safari settings and the iPad is now running normal especially the internet. However, you will not be able to watch the videos like YouTube on the Internet but there is a way round that by downloading its app. Hopefully Apple will bring JavaScript bug fix in IOS 9.2.
