Screen stays dark when alarm goes off in the morning

When I use my iPhone 5 with iOS 9 as my alarm clock to wake me up (iOS clock app), the alarm sounds, but the screen does not light up. This means I have to fumble around in the dark to turn off my alarm. I have found that if I set a different alarm (a minute or two after the original alarm sounds, or an alarm during the day) the screen lights. A new alarm at a different time, if it is the alarm that wakes me, does the same thing where the alarm sounds and the screen stays black.

Is there some deep-sleep function that automatically turns on?

By the way, I have Do Not Disturb on at night, and is still on when the alarm goes off.

Does anyone else have any issues like this with iOS 9? It never did this on previous versions of iOS.

My screen ALWAYS comes on when my alarm goes off, but by the time I reach over to snooze, the screen turns off. Then I have to hit the home button to get it turn back on, just to hit snooze. Sometimes the home button will recognize my finger so quickly, that it unlocks the phone and shuts off the alarm. It's making me crazy.

This is similar to a change that started in iOS7 where when you push a button to wake up the device, and start to swipe on the screen, while maybe reading a notification before finishing the swipe. The device doesn't pay attention to the fact that you're mid-gesture, and will shut off the screen again. So stupid.

I swear, each major release of iOS gets worse and worse. They change some of the dumbest things, and never bring them back.

I'm experiencing the same issue with my iPhone 6S Plus. I don't recall having the problem with my iPhone 6 Plus, but that phone only had iOS9 on it for a short time. And I too only experience this intermittently. I am trying to remember to hit the side button to snooze but I find that hard to do when I am half asleep. : ) I also have a second alarm set for a later time since I tend to accidentally shut off the alarm since the home button is so quick to respond. Glad to see others are experiencing this since I was worried something was wrong with my phone. Hopefully Apple will fix this (and the screen rotation bug) soon.

Wife and I both have a 6s' with 9.0.2 and our screens doesn't wake up. I have an Apple Watch as well but she does not. More often than not I end up turning the alarm off trying to get the screen to wake up to snooze it. Didn't know about the volume button but will try that tomorrow. Still would be nice if the screen actually worked correctly.

9.1 didn't fix it for me either. 😟

Worked as a one off the other morning but today screen was dark again. I first experienced this problem with my 5s the day after upgrading to ios9. It's carried over to my 6s. As others have said it seems to only be a problem when the phone has been idle for a long time (e.g. overnight). I also schedule do not disturb but that is off by the time the alarm sounds.

I can swipe the screen to turn the alarm off even though the screen is blank! I've also noticed that after this happens and I unplug my phone the screen doesn't light up. Normally unplugging my phone causes the screen to light up.😕

I see. When I plug my phone in to charge each night it's not normally less than about 30% charged, on a few occasions recently it's been 50%+ but the screen still hasn't come on with the alarm. Still if you can find a connection between battery level and the screen coming on with the alarm then I'll be interested. I haven't seen one yet though.

I just had this problem again this morning on my iPhone 5s iOS 9.1. The first alarm I had set went off but screen stayed black. I hit snooze then when alarm went off again the screen turned on. Also I use a 2nd alarm (5 minutes after the first alarm) and the screen will turn on for this alarm. The phone was plugged in all night so it wasn't a low battery issue.

Does Apple monitor this sites to try and find solutions? or is there a specific way we need to raise this issue for a possible resolution?

The issue is still happening in OS 9.1, it has to do with the alarm setting on consecutive days and unplugging from the power, the iPhones do not light up the screens.

1. The first time the alarm is set, it rings in the AM and the screen lights up, unplugging the phone from the power (to take to the can with me:)) it also lights up fine.

2. The second morning and beyond, when the alarm goes off the screen DOES NOT light up anymore, even when unplugging from the power cord.

Now Can the Apple tech respond and tell us if there is a solution in the near future?

Thank you

Something someone said earlier got me thinking about the battery. Often times, as I am fading watching TV on my couch, my iPhone battery is getting pretty low. And you get a warning message, with an option to switch to low battery mode. I've done so accidentally a couple of times and I noticed it stays set to on in Settings even if you have a full battery. I haven't seen this dark screen alarm issue too often. (BTW, I've gotten used to snoozing with the side button now, even if the screen lights up.) I'm wondering if it's normal functionality for the screen to stay dark when the alarm goes off if you are in low battery mode. Might be something to test next time my battery is really low. That would still suggest a bug since what contradicts this is I always sleep with my iPhone plugged in and charging. So while the battery might have been very low when I got into bed, in the morning it would be fully charged. Maybe the phone is confused when the alarm goes off and chooses not to display anything onscreen. Just a guess.

mikerisner - great observation! I didn't even realize that until you mentioned it.

It does seem to be a larger issue than the screen remaining dark during alarms, as others have pointed out. My display also fails to illuminate when I unplug it from charging - which it always used to do. On another couple of occasions, I've unplugged it from charging when it's dark and the screen is very bright (I have my brightness adjusted to dim when the ambient light is lower - this appears to the the "normal" display brightness).

Crazy.

Just a couple of notes. I was wondering if low battery mode could be a culprit, but the other day I went to bed with 44% battery, plugged my phone into the charger and when the alarm went off in the morning, the screen was blank.

Also, the past couple of mornings, I've had trouble getting the alarm to snooze when the screen was lit up. I would tap the snooze link on the phone, it would blink indicating that it felt my touch, but the alarm would not stop. I only get a couple of tries before the screen goes dark (though the alarm is still going off) so I end up having to press the side button to snooze. Grr...

I want my old alarm clock back.
