Sometimes there's no sound on notifications after iOS9 update

So I updated my iOS devices (iPhone 6Plus, iPad 4 and iPod Touch 5) with the new iOS 9 on 17th September and since then I have noticed a weird thing. For most of the apps such as whatsapp, viber, Facebook Messenger, Gmail and some games (for which I have set the notifications as active), there's no notification sound but still the notification comes up on the screen. This happens even with the native messaging app (whether I send a text or iMessage). When there's another notification from the same app, then notification plays the sound or at times the sound stutters for multiple notifications from same app (e.g.: whatsapp group texts).

So anyone else facing the same issues? Does anyone know a solution? I have tried restarting, restoring and updating my devices to iOS 9 again and the mute buttons on my iPhone and iPad weren't ON while facing the issues. The volume is at max level.

I guess its already time for Apple to release iOS 9.1 fixing the issues.

iOS devices that were updated:

iPhone 6Plus - 128GB

iPad 4 - 64GB

iPod Touch 5 - 16GB

Yup, great point - should clarify. I actually fully restored the phone to factory through iTunes, which in the process re-installed 9.0.2. Then I restored from a backup I made right before I wiped the phone. Previously I had just upgraded to 9.0.2 via settings and that didn't fix the issue.

It's been about two hours now and so far everything is working as expected.

Please let us know if this really was the full solution. Performing Settings Reset is a bummer. Performing an entire iPhone Restore is torture. Okay, I know: First World Problems... But I'd probably chuck my $800 phone out the window if I did all this, then press and hold the home button, only to have Siri silently begin listening to me without the little double-ding sound.

mikerisner,

I confirmed with DKMadrid that this was the resolution that he had success with. Please note this process does not entail losing any data.

However, it seems you're describing a slightly different issue with Siri. This thread pertained to not receiving notification sounds in iOS 9. Are you describing a separate issue? Please explain.

Subjectively speaking, I'm pretty sure my phone stays silent for about half of my notifications. Sometimes the screen will light up anyway. Other times it reamins as dark as the speaker stays silent.

About half the time, my alarms will not wake the screen. Thankfully, the sound plays, but I have to wake up the screen to silence the alarm. And I am sure the alarm has JUST started playing when I check. Other times, alarms wake up the screen, I swipe to silence them, and all is well.

About 95% of the time, Siri will not play the little "I'm listening" sound when I press and hold the home button.

I frequently check to ensure my volume is set to the middle and the mute is not engaged. There's no reason for this unpredictability in the iOS sounds.

Perhaps, I'm expanding the complaints in this thread, but I've been noticing this with iOS 9. First on my iPhone 5s, and now on my iPhone 6s Plus. Frankly, it's reducing my confidence in my phone. What day will it be that I'm late for work?

So approximately 24 hours after installing 9.0.2 and now my phone's back to random screen-on only notifications. It seemed to work fine for the full day yesterday.

I might be mistaken, but it appears as though the issue is tied to length of time the screen is locked. If I get a message while the screen is on or hasn't been off for very long, the notifications work fine. If it's been 5-10 minutes or longer with the screen off, the notifications seem to stop working. I haven't tested fully, but this is my impression after keeping track of this issue since iOS9 was installed.

This may be trivial, but any chance you have Do Not Disturb turned on? (Settings > Do Not Disturb)

Also, iOS 9 have a newly implemented feature that (to help in saving battery life) will not light up the screen if the iPhone is face down or in your pocket. In other words, if the proximity/ambient light sensor believes there's something obstructing the front screen on the iPhone it would assume it's face down or in a pocket and will not illuminate the screen. Any chance you have something covering the sensors on the top front face of the iPhone (i.e., Case, Screen Protector, etc.)?

If those two things don't apply to you then it may be a bug that you're experiencing.

Hi all,

I have the same issue on my new iPhone 6s. I didn't really notice it at first (I was busy setting up), but I quickly notice that there was no vibration nor sound on some notifications: most of them work normally, but every now and then (maybe one out of four), there is an issue (mostly on Gmail, WhatsApp and Outlook, as they are the apps I receive the most notifications from). I tried to uninstall these apps, to reset all settings, but still the same (I'm on iOS 9.0.2).

Hopefully a future update will fix this annoying issue, as I don't think that restoring my brand new phone to factory is an "acceptable" solution to this issue.
