I went to Settings and toggled Messages and back. Nothing happened but 15 minutes later the bubble just went away. No idea if it was anything I did or not.
Try going to settings > messages > turn off raise to listen (may need to scroll down a little)
Then close and reopen messages again, see if this helps.
I have tried all suggestions. Updating to 9.0.1 didn't work either.
This just happened to me . I rebooted my phone by holding down the power button and home button at the same time, until the apple logo came up then released then turned the phone back on. That fixed it.
Hey everyone, I think this has something to do with the character counter in the messaging app. I turned it on and the bar disappeared. I also turned off mms messages and imessage as well and turned them back on so this may have done something.
I am able to fix this temporarily by doing any of the following:
1. Power off the phone and back on
2. Close the text message app
3. Turn on or off the "show subject field" setting
None of these solutions are permanent - the problem comes back.
Is anyone from Apple reading these comments? This is a major fail and needs to be fixed ASAP. Update 9.0.1 doesn't fix it.
Text message is one of the critical apps on smartphone, and this bug is a major problem.
I was able to resolve this issue by double pressing the home button and swiping up on the message app to close it. After I restarted the message app the bubble was not there.
I was able to get rid of the problem by backing up and restoring the iPhone.
Its been okay for a week. Noticed today there is another update. Maybe that has a bug fix.
I also have the 0:00 grey field that prevents me from viewing what I type. As a work around I press return 3 times to shift the grey box out of the way. Occasionally the keyboard is missing when responding to new text messages which requires me to open the text twice before I'm able to respond.

Factory firmware was reloaded at Apple a few days ago to fix a different bug that caused my screen to black out when launching an application for the first time.
Anyone having this other issue? iPhone 6 updated to ios9 screen goes black when I open an app
SOLVED
Go to settings, messages and turn on the character counter and the grey blob disappears.
Thank you - worked like a charm. I have absolutely no idea how somebody figured this out!

ios 9.0.2 happened to me too. I shut off, and when I powered up it was gone.
This is the best solution so far. Quick fix. Thanks
I also found that it would go away if I hit "select all," then hit the X to delete it.
