Apple Server 5.0.4 Update SSL Re-direct fixed (if using Wiki)

Dear all,

If you have updated to the new Apple Server App. version 5.0.4 and now have no port 80 websites, but have a re-direct to either a non existent SSL website, or like me, a re-direct to your Wiki no matter what you do, I have a fix (courtesy of Apple Cover which I use and is worth every penny!).

1. To confirm, I already had a standard re-direct from port 80 non-SSL websites to port 443 SSL website set-up (best for security) for normal use. I also run the Apple Wiki service. After update to 5.0.4, all I got was the Wiki, unless I typed the exact path to my non Wiki website.

2. Make sure the Web service and the Wiki service are running!

3. To fix - open finder, in main menu (top of screen) select Go, then Go To Folder, then type /Library/Server/Web/Config/apache2/other - click Go to open this folder, inside you will find a file called COM.APPLE.WEBAPP.WIKI.conf - which you need to re-name to COM.APPLE.WEBAPP.WIKI.conf_old (or whatever you like, as long as its different - don’t delete though, that’s not good practice). Note this file will not exist if the Wiki service is not running.

4. Hey presto - it all works...

5. Apple say a service update with a fix is coming soon, and this fix wont affect their fix (so many fixes - so little time :-)

Hope this helps

HI,

My feeling is that because port 80 (non SSL) websites have become the target of so many hackers worldwide, Apple have made SSL sites the new norm.

Here is what I would do, take a look at Godaddys web site and buy an SSL certificate - go for a 3 year deal and you will be suprised how little it costs. To install this, just google around, it's very easy with the latest server app, you will then have full encryption and be up and running again. You can install a self signed certificate if you have not done so already, again have a google around, this self signed will still give you the security warning though.

You may think that being pushed into buying a certificate is unfair, but nowadays sites which don't show the little SSL lock sign are rare and the target of hackers, and you won't want to be hacked and have you whole setup ruined...

What do you think?

HI,

Thats correct. Once you get your SSL certificate, your web site will work perfectly with no warnings to people who visit. A bonus is that your mail server, if you use this service will also work properly, in fact every service that can use the SSL certificate then becomes secure.

I Would not be without one...

Let me know how you get on...

Dear all,

Just as a quick update...

The new OS/Server App udates (El Capitan 10.11.1) and the Server update (5.0.15), seem to make the server fly. I do use SSD's which help (self installed on my Mac Mini Servers, an easy job and well worth it), but now emails, web, calendar, chat, contacts, etc. all seem to be running like the machine has had two or three expresso's, so good news.

I did notice that after the updates, the server takes abut 24 hours or so to settle down, perhaps its doing some background tasks etc., so take this into account when testing - post updating.

Oh, and finally, I got the iOS file sharing to work properly (with these updates), so now my employees have access to files on their phones and pads, which again is fast and easy to use. So well done Apple.
