iPhone 6s Distorted Sound

Hello All,

I have just received my iPhone 6S (iOS 9.0.1) and i'm really enjoying the new features, however I've noticed that when I have my Ringer Volume turned up full there is a slight crackling/distortion when playing sounds from the bottom external speaker.

The best way I've found to reproduce this issue is by going into settings, turning the ringer volume to full (having the ringer volume anything below full will stop the distortion) and then playing the ringtone "Opening", the speaker will make a minor distorting sound at the high points of the ringtone.

I've spoken to a friend who has a 6S Plus and they have reproduced the same issue, I would like to ask if anyone in the community could try the ringtone above and let me know if they get the same problems with the speaker?

Thanks in advance

Craig

Just talk to them at the Apple Store and let them test your iPhone. There are so many reasons for sound distortion that yours may not really be a problem that will be fixed by replacing it. The distortion I was experiencing was actually not that bad after the updates to iOS were installed, but I exchanged it anyway. Hopefully the distortion will not return, but if it does I will just live with it since it actually was not very noticeable unless you are listening for it. After reflection, it is hard to say if mine was for sure hardware. Let them run their diagnostics and see what they think.

Just updated to iOS 9.1 beta 4 and I still have the annoying distortion at the end of the swoosh after a couple of text messages. Everything else sounds fine except for that text message send and receive notification. I've never experienced ringtone or other notification distortions. I guess I'll try a couple more updates before I visit the Genius Bar.

My appointment was advanced to yesterday morning. Three people behind the genius bar did not hear the distortion that I heard and they also ran diagnostics. They said the phone was fine. I hear it less when the phone is not cranked up to the highest volume level. They did not exchange my phone but did keep notes regarding my visit. Do I need to ask for an exchange??

So glad to find this thread because I have been driving myself crazy with noticing this distortion!

I can tell you it is not due to backups because my iPhone 6S is brand new first hand and I did not load a backup to my device. I have noticed the issue while sending iMessages. The swoosh sound effect while sending is slightly distorted.

I am very surprised I noticed that as being my issue, because after reading the original post and trying the "Opening" ringtone on MAX, I definitely noticed the speaker / audio quality issue is REAL!

The nearest appointment time at my local mall is October 12th unfortunately, so I will be definitely getting my device swapped!

HI,

news from this "Speaker Gate"...

1) Restart the iPhone

2) uncheck and chek the sound volume equ in music menu. (The laSt one)

3) charge the iPhone to 100%

and... Try your music, ringtone or video....

The distortion is gone.

for people who changed their iPhone, i think they picked iPhone fully charged... so no distortion.

There is a simple way to be sure whether it's a hardware or software issue. It will confirm that without a single doubt.

Plug your iPhone to your Mac, then launch QuickTime, screen record your iPhone with the audio from it.

Go to the message app, and send a message. If you hear it distorted on your phone, but good on the screen record, then you have your answer 😉
