If I delete my hotmail account will all the messages in Mailboxes be deleted too ?

My hotmail account 'no longer exists' (deleted by Microsoft with no reference to me) so I want to delete it from Mail preferences. There is a warning -

'Deleting the account will remove all of its data from Mail. This action cannot be undone.'

Does that mean that old emails will be deleted from mailboxes ??

I tried this but it means all emails in all boxes are duplicated and they will still all be deleted by closing my account. Do I understand correctly ?

I suppose I need to get the emails out of Mail where they cannot be deleted and then put them back.

So I searched for 'hotmail' and pasted the answer of 1600 emails into a new mailbox called 'saved hotmail'. This withdraws them from their normal locations. So I exported this mailbox to my desktop. This now contains 3 items - info list, mbox, and table of contents. I could re-import this of course. The question now is should I delete the Hotmail account ( which I can no longer use ) from preferences and THEN re-import. Will that achieve success and have all the actual emails still intact ?
