Since upgrading my iphone to ios9 i have a problem with texts. When I want to respond to a text, instead of having a blank input box there is a greyed out field displaying a value of 0.00, and this obscures what I am inputting ! I can only read what I have texted to someone once it has been sent. Help!!

do this, it will fix it
1. Settings
2. Messages
3. Turn off character count
you can turn it back off, but I don't think it matters. I left mine on and so far it hasn't come back.

Turn Character Count On, not Off, that was a typo on Cadynce's reply.
This worked for me, but the character count was already off, so I switched it on and it sorted the problem! Why the heck they can't sort bugs like this out before launching a new os beggars belief!!
Most all of the suggestions work for a time or two and then the gray box comes back. I have now gone into Settings, Messages, and "Raise to Listen", and switched it off. THAT is currently working for me, and the gray box has been gone longer than it ever has before.

I don't think this actually fixes the problem, I think what actually fixes it is going to Settings - Messages and changing Raise to Listen to OFF. You will not see the Raise to Listen option if you don't have iMessage turned on. If you don't iMessage, turn it on temporarily so that you can change the Raise to Listen to OFF, and then turn iMessage back off. When you first turn iMessage on, it takes a few seconds before it changes over and shows the extra settings (you may have to back out of the Messages screen and then go back into it to see the change).
PS: I just got pushed the 9.1 update, so maybe that will fix this problem permanently. (fingers crossed!)
iOS 9.1 is reported to fix this issue. It is listed in the release notes.

TThank you for the quick fix. Has been driving me mad. Along with other ios9 updates. EMAIL but that's another story.
What other troubleshooting have you tried? You would be one of those it didn't help. As a matter of fact, you are the only one I've seen that it hasn't helped.
