I updated to IOS 9 this morning and when i try to text there's this gray bar extending through out the text box with "0:00" at the end, I cannot get rid of it and I cannot see what I type as I'm typing. Also, when I go to send a text to a new person, it does not appear. This happened after updating to ios9

So far the only thing that seems to work is to change the setting under messages close subject field. It defaulted to plain text on an IMessage line and got rid of the gray bar. I am running ios 9 on an old 4s.
This worked for me...looks different from before, with a subject line, but I can see now! Thank you!

On the iphone 6 go to settings, messages, then "show subject field". I turned this from on to off then back on again and the gray box disappeared.
Just turn the "Show subject Field" back off again (in settings, messages) and the subject line will disappear!
So I don't see in message settings Show subject field. I don't get the grey bar on new messages, but old ones.
I used the subject "on" "off" trick a lot of folks seem to have found. I think looking at it that this has to do with the Video Message button - I noticed it asked for some sort of expiration in settings. Apparently we can now send Video message using the camera button while messaging

I have a 5c and have Subject switched off and have tried switching it on and off. The grey box doesn't always appear and then it does even with the same contact. It makes no sense but is annoying.
Any other suggestions?
I Have solved this problem (for me at least) the "on and off" trick is just a temporary fix. I do not use iMessage and when I updated it forced me to sign in, so I signed out. And the Audio message was on, what I did was sign jnto iMessage again, turned it off, then signed out and it solved my problem.
What seemed to work for me was none of the above but by closing the camera application (it was open). Once I closed it none of my messages had that grey bar any longer. I tried changing the settings for subject field and I tried a reset. I tried "turn off raise to listen" nothing worked but the second I closed my camera in the background it went away!
As far as I'm concerned, this is how to fix the problem... turn Off the "Raise to Listen" feature.
