Apple Mail shows unread mail in trash

My Apple Mail (v 8.2) on OS X Yosemite now shows the unread mail count icon when I delete an iCloud mail from my inbox. This is new behavior. When I get a new email message in my inbox, it correctly shows the unread number icon. I select the message, read it, the unread icon goes away, then I delete the message; The message goes into the trash, then immediately shows up as "unread" with the unread icon in trash.

Anyone have a similar issue? I've gone through the Mail account preferences and do not find anything that has changed or will fix this.

Thanks.

I also was having this problem on my 2011 27" iMac with El Capitan. In my case the unread count was only an issue in my iCloud email account in Mail, not a problem with my Gmail and Yahoo accounts. I fumbled around with following the instructions at this link (see below), also sent myself an email to my problem iCloud address (third comment suggested that), did the rebuild a couple times (selecting just the inbox and/or "select all" on all emails within it) and finally succeeded. Now my unread count has disappeared, finally.

Mail in El Capitan keeps showing unread emails

Oh darn it!!! The solution was temporary, the unread account has returned. 😕
