How do I hang up a call with iPhone 6 and iOS 9.0.1?

I feel so stupid. I've had an iPhone since 2012 with the iPhone 5, but after upgrading my iPhone 6 to iOS 9 (and now 9.0.1) last week, I cannot figure out how to hang up a call without logging in.

When i was done with the call, I used to just turn the screen on and hit the red button. Now, turning on the phone just gets me to the login screen where I have to swipe or put in my PIN, then make sure the phone app is launched and hang up then.

Surely there is an easier way to hang up calls.

Hi everyone who is absolutely crazy over this issue...

I often times make calls using Hey Siri... other times for whatever reason the phone is locked when the call is going, the only thing on the lock screen is the number or name of the person I am talking to!!! FRUSTRATING!!!!!!!!!!!

so just found the answer, TAP the number or name will bring up the call function screen.

ARGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH

I found the answer here...

It turns out, you just need to tap the phone number or contact name displayed on the lock screen, and you will get the call controls. This makes sense, in hindsight, as the swipe right now has a new behavior, but it wasn't obvious to me either.

iphone - Where did the button to hang up the phone from the lock screen go on iOS 10 - Ask Different

so happy to find the solution been driving me crazy

While I'm happy for you that your iPhone works perfectly, your response doesn't really help solve the problem that both EdHans and I have. The only thing I can surmise is that there is a setting for this that you either don't know about or won't share, or that your calls are actually terminating at the other end and you just THINK this works for you. I tested it again and nothing I try from the lock screen will terminate a call, INCLUDING hitting the power button which only turns the screen on and off.

It doesn't matter if I initiate the call or receive the call, nor what screen I'm one when the call occurs. once the screen locks I can't end the call without unlocking the phone.

Sure, speakerphone will prevent your phone from locking, but that is a real battery suck and who wants to make every call on speakerphone just so you can hang up?

I'm not sure what your issue might be, but when I receive a call when the screen is locked, the screen flashes on, and I am able to accept the call. I put the phone to my ear, take the call and when I am done, I bring the phone away from my ear and the screen lights to see the screen, which contains the call buttons, including the red button to hang the call up. The only time that does not appear when I move the phone from my ear is if he other party hangs up first and the call is disconnected and I briefly see the lock screen.

Do you have a case on the phone? Is there a screen protector? Is there anything that is blocking the proximity sensor? If you make a call and put the phone up to your ear, does the screen blank? Does it come back on when you move the phone from your ear? Again, my phone never locks when I am in a call, whether I place the call or receive it.

My point was that Apple hasn't "broken" anything or changed a feature that works perfectly well. It still works exactly the way it's supposed to, the way it has for as long as I can remember. Therefore, the problem is with your phone specifically. You'll need to figure out what that is. Chris's post is a good place to start.

Thats a fallacious conclusion: Apple removed the End Call button from the lock screen, a feature that worked perfectly well as long as I can remember - at least as far back as my iPhone 3. Again, popping in to defend Apple's decision is not helpful. I'm here trying to figure out a problem I'm having, not get into an argument over how infallible Apple is or isn't. Unless you, like Chris, have some helpful questions or an idea as to why this is specific to my (and one other user's) phone then please, resist the urge to respond.

Chris, thanks for your response. The phone doesn't need to lock when you put it to your ear because the proximity sensor turns off the screen saving power. I'm a high-volume user though so I usually use headphones, and when you do the screen locks at the preset time in the settings, in my case 1 minute.

Before you say it, I know you can normally hang up the phone using the remote controls on the headphones, but these are really old and that button doesn't work so well any more. Otherwise they are perfectly good headphones with great audio quality and a great mic. Plus that remote isn't so easy to find in the dark. Oh well, I guess I'll have to start shopping for a new set of headphones.

If anyone from Apple is out there...please re-add the end call button or let me use the power button to end calls from the lock screen.

No, they did not.
It is on the lock screen.

It is already locked.

The screen is simply turned off when you hold it to your ear. (locking the screen & turning it off are different).

The END call button is on the lock screen.

I am not suggesting that Apple is infallible. Nor did I comment at all about the End call button on the screen of the phone. I was trying to help you focus your troubleshooting efforts. Throwing up your hands and saying Apple broke things is not going to resolve your issue. And, make no mistake, it is an issue with your phone, not something that everyone is having.

If Chris's suggestions don't resolve the issue, it's time for the standard troubleshooting. I'd start with restoring from a back up and, should that fail, restoring from new. The step after that would be to make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store.

This is the in-call lock screen in iOS9.2:

User uploaded file

From this screen I cannot hang up my phone without unlocking it, which is a bit of a pain.

I think the screen you're talking about, Chris, is the Call screen, that has your call controls ie.) keypad, Speaker, etc. If you're taking the call by putting the headset to your ear, your phone won't go back to the lock screen in call like it does for someone using headphones.

Like I said, a new pair of headphones will fix this for me, but the power button definitely is not the answer.

Apple removing the end call button was the issue from the original post. Your reply didn't fix his issue, and so it didn't fix mine. You make the invalid assumption that since it isn't happening to you, then it must be a problem with my phone. It isn't specific to my phone, there are a LOT of posts in forums out there regarding this. If you are really posting in this forum to be helpful, I applaud you, but in this particular case you aren't being helpful and I've asked you to stop replying. This isn't about you. Please just stop.
