El Capitan running slowly?

Is anyone else having the issue of your Mac running wicked slow after the new El Capitan update? Word, Safari, Preview, and iTunes wouldn't open- they froze and I had to force quit them. Even typing this there is a major lag and the pinwheel appears. What's up with that? So far I hate how slow it's making my mac.

I had the same problem with my mid-2010 IMac, but then I upgraded from El Capitan to Sierra. Huge improvement! Problem solved.

Since I figured it was also a RAM issue, I ordered 16MB of it (from 4MB), but I never installed it. Now I'm wondering whether I even need to.

Huge relief as I was almost ready to order a replacement computer.

Its running slow again..Beachballs are back. Really good this ain't it..I'm now considering if this iMac is really fit for purpose..

I have still not got any further with getting the cctv to work.. It still only shows half a screen garbled & the other half black.. I'm wondering if that fantastic isight is being a pain. I have done the turning the isight off bit but that didn't help.. Any ideas anyone ???.

Cctv did work ok on Snow leopard & yosemite..

Hmmm. Will try that. I think there is just a lot of junk on the drive that I do not need as well. Ok. Ran EtreCheck

Hi

i had all the same issues and tried similar fixes/tests with pram etc.

BUT

after restoring ring with time machine to previous install (which worked fine both originally and after the restore) I tried upgrading again. Previously the upgrade appeared to install ok but left me with a v v slow I useable mac with the beach ball every 10 seconds- but this time the install left me with a frozen white screen. I followed advice in the other threads on how to fix this (boot in safe mode by holding shift, find unsigned kext files and delete them). Rebooted and the install completed.

Now my mac is back to full speed. No beach ball whatsoever and it's a 2010 iMac too.

I am guessing therefore that the white screen and beach ball problems are the same thing. Ie old kext files. I had about 30 to remove Coming from things like blackberry desktop (a phone I got rid of 5 years ago and thought I'd uninstalled) and some old software from a printer I got rid of.

Hope this helps.

I solved my slowness it seems. After completely wiping and installing El Capitan I still had a lot of laggy issues. Start up was very slow, and after I let it sit it seemed to get better but opening Apps was very very slow. Spot Light even lagged, were it wouldn't even keep up with my keystrokes and I constantly got little micro pauses for the beach ball to spin a few seconds. I didn't see any CPU or Memory saturation problems, so I assumed it was my disk.

I tried all of the solutions in this thread but what seemed to help the best was turning off all of those extras in spotlight. I kept only apps, folders, and system preferences enabled, as that's really the only thing I use spotlight for anyway. Restarted after that and my system is much snappier.

Open system preferences, and click Spotlight. The first window there lists the categories included in search, like Bing Web, Calculator, Fonts, Email and all sorts of other things.

I use Outlook which has it's own search tool that I use. The only thing I want from Spotlight is apps, system settings, and maybe folders which is what I left enabled. I happened to have an update available so I installed that and restarted and things are definitely a lot better.

I find it hard to believe the "El Capitan running slowly?" problem is related to Spotlight. Maybe I don't understand Spotlight. I thought it was not even running unless you invoke it. I have not changed anything in regard to Spotlight since upgrading and my system runs fine. I did have the problem with "Mail" but solved that as outlined in this thread.

Can someone explain how the Spotlight function could cause a slowdown?

Nov 16, 2015 3:28 PM in response to MyNameIsJerf

I think I understand how the Spotlight works. It needs to index right after upgrading. I did find my MacBook Pro running slowly for the first couple of days. I blamed it on downloading all the sync stuff from iCloud. But once all that was done it has run fine.

My iMac was only slow for a couple of hours. It only had about 85GB of stuff on the HD.

But both machines are running great now. My MacBook Pro slows down a bit when I get 8 or 10 apps running. Especially if I have 2 browsers, all the "sync" needing apps, iMovie and Photoshop running at the same time.

Hope is not lost!

I have a MacBook Pro 15 inch, early 2011 (yikes!) that has always been a bit cranky, prone to Safari crashes and previously running OS X 10.8.5. I really wanted to upgrade to El Capitan in the hopes that anything would improve speed and stability. Here's my story that goes from bad to worse... to great.

Yes, the download for El Capitan was slow but I expected that with my slow wi-fi so I let it do it's thing. The real problems started after the multiple restarts and verifications and full installation. IMMEDIATE spinning wheel, even opening one single web page or an app which gave me "not responding" on any app. I had to force quit multiple times. Computer essentially became desk weight. Huge frustration.

I followed the advice about resetting the SMC and there was immediate improvement (over the spinning wheel freak out) but still no better than what I had before, especially considering the time and effort. Then, I just restarted AGAIN, let it sit overnight (weird, I know but I was exhausted) and the next day... perfection. Much faster than what I had before and much more stable. Not lightning fast but very good.

These apple user threads have always helped me (unlike Apple directly) so I wanted to give you some hope. If my cranky OS X 10.8.5 can be improved, so can yours. The Captain is a 9 of 10 (after a bit of smoothing).

PS -- If you use Final Draft (for scripts) you will need to reload the courier font which the Captain doesn't recognize. Easy-Peasy.
