iPhone 5, iOS 9.0.2 can't sync on iTunes

Just downloaded and upgraded iOS 9.0.2 to my iPhone 5 via iTunes, then immediately got this after the phone rebooted:

"The iPhone “iPhone” cannot be used because it requires a newer version of iTunes. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes."

My MacBook is running OSX 10.6.8 and iTunes 11.4, both the latest it's able. End of the road?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I have the same problem after "upgrading" my iphone 5 to ios 9.0.2 and i cannot upgrade my macbook os from os x 10.6.8 to el capitan because my 2008 version doesn't have the hardware requirements. Is there no workaround? Why won't Apple let you upgrade to higher itunes than 11.4 with os x 10.6.8. I'm furious! All i want to be able to do is add and remove songs on my iphone 5.

It broke for me on 9.0.1. I did double check. I found nothing that would suggest that 9.0.1 upgrade through iTunes would break the connection to iTunes backups and syncing on Snow Leopard.

I'm sick about this. I was very careful about backing up and syncing my iPhone and now I can't.

Apple blew it on this one. Yes, I know about old technology and updates and I have always been careful. It may have been an oversight on my part but when I get the notification (via the very app that sent me the notification to upgrade) that an upgrade was available I found nothing to suggest that I would no longer be able to use iTunes to backup or sync my iPhone.

Apple is straight evil. They know exactly what's going on here and don't care if its users have Windows XP and can't update to the latest version of iTunes. I'm completely screwed now since I can't transfer music or photos from my iPhone to my computer or from my computer to my iPhone. Now my computer is a glorified typewriter thanks to the good people at Apple. Thanks for the great communications and warning about the upgrade, Apple. This is total bullsh*t!!

Additional here is the ONLY solution that i have found after hours on end of research, to at least get my contacts back on the iPhone to at least use it for phoning and WhatsApp again:

1. First you need to do the clean update, or if you have left with the last state after the annoying iOS9.02 update after the "cant sync message in iTunes" just stay at the after-install-screen on the iPhone/ipad-screen which gives you the opportunity to "use iPhone with new system".

Click on that option, enter all the nessesary data to make the phone usable (enter Apple-ID, choose language, adjust date and time etc.).

Next go to enter your wanted eMail-Adress-account entering all nessesary data to make it usable. Check if you can receive any eMails on the phone with it.

So once your iPhone/iPad is now rendered with a new usable system iOS9.02 and you are on the mainscreen with all functions of the phone working you may prepare for the rest.

2. Second now, go to your mailprogram (Mail, Entourage or Outlook) and export the contacts of your adressbook as a VCARD-file. Remember the location.

3. Next go to your Mailprogram set up a new eMail to yourself entering the eMail-Adress which is set up on your iPhone. The send the eMail to yourself (if possible with a second eMail account) attaching the VCARD-file prepared and exported before.

4. Go to your iPhone and receive your eMails. Open the eMAil with the attached VCARD-file, click on it.

5. It wil ask you if you want to "create new users from the VCARD-file", click YES.

It will take a minute or so (depending on the amount of contained adresses of your adressbook) and voila! after that minute you at least have back all your needed adresses to use your iPhone again as a PHONE or WhatsApp communication tool.

Sure this is just a little workaround, not giving you back full control over photos, sounds and music under your control. To do this you will have to buy expensive thirdparty-software like e.g. WonderShare´s "Dr. Fone for iOS", "TunesGo Retro" or else.

But at least you could use your phone again, having back adresses.

Hope this helps some other users who are stuck with the similar sync-problem on 10.6.8 and iTunes 11.4, at least as log until Apple is (hopefully) releasing another working iOS-Update (9.1 maybe?) which makes our phones working again the way it should. Also on old machines.

C´mon Apple do something about it...

I'm spitting nails. F U Apple. Here's my saga. Contacted Apple Care and got to talk to a "senior" adviser. Explained to him I had a 7 year old iMac and didn't want to upgrade to the new Iphone 9 version in any way. All I was looking for was a revert to an older app for the phone which I had a copy in my iTunes. Explained having $700 of accounting software not compatible with later operating systems 10.6.8 on my iMac. All I wanted was a revert to older version of a phone app. To make a gut wrenching story short he attempted to walk me through the process. It failed. Now knowing all I've said above he suggested that usually upgrading to iOS 9 should solve that problem, so Like a dumb *** fan boy of apple i said fine if that will solve the problem of getting the older version back from the back up onto my phone. I do it and bam right in the arse. Apple you MF'rs. Now of course like many of you realize it bricks your phone from using the older iTunes. Would any one say I walked into it with my eyes closed not knowing that my older iTunes wouldn't work, I wouldn't. This came from a senior adviser and never once did he say by the way ***** once we do it your iTunes link to your phone is gone. Do you think if he had I'd still do it? Of course not. So I'm left with, if i want my phone to have the capability of being backed up, making play lists from my library of songs or transferring photos I'm SOL. Unless I'm willing to duplicate my accounting software shelling out another $700 to operate on the new OS system, which I'm not. I was a few days from buying a couple of new iPhones but why should I now. It might run a little faster than this clunky 9.0.2 on my iPhone 5S but I'll be ****** if i spend another dollar with apple. POST A WARNING AT LEAST FOR THE MANY OTHER LEGACY SYSTEMS OUT IN THE MARKET YOU POS. This is the ultimate planned obsolescence scam I've ever seen. Apple you greedy multinational tax scamming slave labor robbing ********. Now we know why they invented guillotines

Dear Jajan Mistery,

why dont you just post your knowledge here in the Forum to help other victims of the crunchy Apple error out of their misery instead of posting your email-adress?

As far as i am concerned there is NO way of resetting your iPhone and getting it back to work qwith the older 10.6.8 system. At least this is what i´ve been told at the Apple supportline ... once you have iOS9.02 or later installed there is no way back.

I basically DID reset my iPhone cause when installed iOS9.02 all i did is that i HAD to set ip up as a new iPhone to still use it at all.

But no matter what still it want sync.

So why dont you post your mystere tricks right here to help us all?

Would be nice to find a solution for so many of us...

Hey pipeman451,

i completely understand your fustration as i am exactly the same (as also my stepfather is) who just had bought a brandnew iPhone 6s on my advice and now ran into the same trap that Apple has opened up for us users of older systems... just by syncing his iPhone through iTunes 11.4 and rendering his phone almost useless as no more sync of adresses or calendar, nor music or photos is possible for him. Now he uses his phone as a luxury piece just for phoning, not beeing able to install his data anymore. He is fed up like i am spending 800.- € on a brandnew iPhone which now is no longer supported...just because he is also using a system that Apple refuses to keep updated for good.

Only thing i can tell you is: try to calm a bit because by getting back your adresses into your phone you might use it again (as i did). The trick is pretty easy, so you might get back your contacts into your phone at least, as i explained it here already just above.

Apart from that you may still use your phone as wanted by using thirdparty software from Wondershare, like "TunesGO Retro" which is able to sync at least all your contacts, images and musicfiles or even restore from your hopefiully done last backup of your iPhone from iTunes - but without iT itself. Its "only" 90 U$, so might be worthy give it a try.

I am completely by your side as i am frustrated as well, cause Apple meanwhile has become a redicolous stockmarket machine which doesnt really care for its users anymore by acting like they do. And still they dont help out even if so many of us are caught in the trap even if there are hundrets and maybe thousands of users caught in the same s..h....i........t..., even knowing about it. They just need to read their own forums which they dont it seems. Or no wait, they DO read it, as they erased two posts of mine TWICE before, as criticism isnt welcome inside the community-forums...

For me personly my decision has now fallen definate by the release of the last update of iOS 9.1 when Apple DID NOT correct the sync problem for us caught in the same situation even knowing that here are so many having the same issue.

Everybody needs a second chance, we´re all not perfect i thought, so i wanted to wait until the next upcoming update which was iOS 9.1.

Now that the error still remains i will sell my iPhone and get an Android one, as they dont show these false and kinky limitations on older Macs. And i know many other who will do the same (including my stepfather). What else can we do? Apple has sent us out into the cold so we´ll search for new homes.

Its dramatic for me after 25 long years of beeing satisfied using and buying so many Apple products (Hard- and software) for thousands of bucks, that i have to be creepin away like a rude cat in the rain now ... but Apple now kicked us out. Well, so long, bye bye then. That was it.
