Just finished installing OS X El Capitan on my iMac (mid 2014 model) with no issue other than the fact that my Apple wired full-size keyboard will not work now. It is the most current Apple keyboard and was working fine until the update. I had to switch back to my bluetooth keyboard until I figure out what the issue is. Hoping someone has some ideas for me?

I had the same issue today. New iMac brand-new extended keyboard. I couldn't get there after restarting, so I could not go to about this Mac. Tried every USB port, and none worked. Got the dialogue that it was looking for a discoverable Bluetooth keyboard. But I had a wired one plugged in!! What finally worked is plugging a wired mouse into the wired keyboard.
If you plug it in and go to "About This Mac…" and click on "System Report…" does your system see it under "USB?"
Yes, it shows up under the USB section of System Report and now the keyboard works! I'm not sure what the issue was, I even restarted, unplugged and plugged back in and it didn't work but as soon I followed those steps it must have activated the keyboard, I have no idea how that would fix the issue but it did, thank you for the help 🙂
It causes the system to scan the USB ports so it's possible the USB chip just got "stuck." :-)

I have the same issue and this didn't solve it. The ports on my MacBook Pro are working, I can use other usb hardware(e.g. mouse, usb drive) and the keyboard also works on a different PC.
I'm having the same issue too. No solution either. My keyboard only works when using the USB extension adapter that came with the keyboard. Really annoying.
The same with my USB full sized keyboard. It just stopped working. It works well with other macs. No wired keyboard works with my iMac. Bluetooth keybord works. So I rebooted my iMac to recovery and whoa the USB keyboard works there, is recogniezed and can type in terminal... So it needs to be corrupted driver, kext or something similiar... It seems that only reinstall of OSX from recovery might help.
Reinstallation of OSX 10.11 from recovery to the original boot drive sorted it. All settings were preserved. Wired keyboard works again.
The only thing that works for me is unplugging the keyboard and plugging it back in again. Everything worked fine before the El Capitan upgrade so, surely, there will be a patch soon? I don't reboot all that often, but I hope I don't have to manually reconnect my keyboard every time I do. Please?
I know the answer comes a bit late, but I just got the same issue. After I tried to restart my MacBook Pro just as often as I unplugged my keyboard and put it back I found a (yet very simple) way to solve this.
I'm having the same problem with my Mac Pro and none of the suggested tricks seem to work for me. Very frustrating.

and it has to do with the USB power. At least mine started working through a USB hub (D-link DUB-1340).
Mine started after shutting down the computer and taking power cord out.
Unplug keyboard.
Plug power cord back in and turn on computer.
When login screen comes up, plugged in keyboard and it works.

I solved my problem by installing an externally powered USB hub between my Apple Mac and my Apple USB keyboard.
None of the other tricks worked, luckily this one did.
