Does anyone know if iDVD works with El Capitan?
It works fine. We can't access photos in a Photos library but can still access an iPhoto library or add a folder to the Media/Folders window that we can access from inside iDVD to add photos to a project.
Also follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
Thanks for the tip. 🙂

I edit movies of lectures in FCP X. I set Chapter Markers for various sections -- Intro, Presentation, Q&A, etc. Typically, each movie is about 1 hour long, so I don't put more than one on a DVD. I output (share) these movies, including the Chapter markers, as QT .mov files. When I drag one of them into an iDVD project, iDVD automatically creates both Main and Chapter menus. (And yes, the Chapter text is missing, but IMHO typing it into iDVD is a small price to pay.)
I have not been able to find a replacement for iDVD that will recognize Chapter markers in a QT .mov file. A few of the "Create DVD" apps in the Mac App store claim to support Chapters, but it seems that either (1) they automatically create chapters at fixed time intervals, or (2) they require the user to input chapter timecodes manually. Neither is a very workable solution.
Can anyone suggest a replacement for iDVD that -- like iDVD -- understands Chapter markers in a QT movie and creates the Chapter menus for each Chapter marker?
Thanks!

There are none.
I continue to use iDVD with Mac OS 10.9.5, booting from a partition on my hard drive. The nearest you can come using the current Mac OS would be using "Toast". With Toast, you can set chapter markers every 5 - 10 minutes etc. You cannot put the chapter markers in precise locations like you can with iDVD. I think I've tried all the alternatives, nothing remotely comes close to iDVD.
There has been an encoding error on everyone that I have tried to burn to disc image.
I was wishing the same thing for the last 60+ hours I have made and remade and attempted to burn movies.
Someone, somewhere MUST have an answer to this. Why mac stopped this is beyond me an apple does not have a good reason for it. I have tons of videos etc of children and grandchildren and family events that will seem to go by the wayside. As for toast, as some suggest, as far as I know toast is only good for copying cd's/vdv's. I used to have some creative flexibility with idvd but what is the answer now???
Thanks BG
Got that right! I don't know how or what I did BUT I was able to burn BUT dvd will only play on cpu NOT on any dvd player therefore rendering it useless for presenting dvd's to family members for memories.
Thanx, BG
New macs don't have a DVD drive; they haven't for years. Apparently, both Apple and Adobe have decided that there is no longer any need to support optical discs because they think that everyone now distributes their videos on YouTube! and other online video services rather than on DVDs.
Both vendors completely ignore the continuing need for DVDs for distributing movies of one's family to relatives and friends, and the demand by commercial clients who want DVDs for business purposes. This is unfortunate, but is not likely to change. Other software developers apparently see things the way Apple and Adobe do, believing that there is no longer a market for DVD editing software. (This is true not only of DVD editing developers, but of DVD labeling software publishers as well.)
The closest available and supported DVD editing app today is probably Toast, but Toast doesn't recognize Chapter markers that have been placed on a timeline in Final Cut Pro and then exported from FCPX in the QuickTime movie when the project is finished.

I just purchased a brand-new Macbook Pro with built-in optical SuperDrive. In stock at my local Apple Store and also sold currently on Apple's website.

I continue to use iDVD on a regular basis. When burning Blu-rays, I used Toast. I think I have tried just about every DVD authoring program that exists. Nothing comes close to iDVD.
If you want to do movie editing, and remain in the Apple club, (and I do) you've really got to keep a partition on your hard drive with OS 10.9.5.
That way, you can run iMovie HD 06 as well as iDVD, and Disk Utilities with zero issues.
Yes, the situation is rather sad. But it is, what it is.
I have updated to El Capitan 10.11.3 and have noticed an issue in the Soft Frame template. The semi transparent vertical band the used to run down the centre of the menu and separate the two haves of the screen is missing...😟
Has anyone else noticed this or any ideas as to a solution?
Tim
I am not sure how to post on this community and so I will reply to this link and hopefully it will find its way. Here is what I have and how I resolved my issue.
I figured out how to get iDVD to work again on my early 2008 Macbook Pro. I have kept my mac updated and currently have El Capitan on my mac but iDVD would not longer work. I put my old iDVD into the trash but didn’t empty it. I inserted the original Mac OS X Install Disc 1, choose to install bundled software only. It then prompted me to insert disc 2 and did a custom install and installed iDVD and its extra content. It took me 2 times to install. The first time it told me it was unsuccessful so I tried it again and it installed. When I clicked on the icon it had a mark across it like it was not valid and when I tried to open iDVD it said that my version was too old. It said something like I had a version 7.0.1. So i searched for an update and found this apple update website, Apple - Support - Downloads . I downloaded the update for 7.0.4 and finally it worked so I ran with it and managed to successfully burn a complete dvd without any issues during playback wth music, menus, drop zones and playback of my movie. The burn multiple disc feature worked for me also without any issues. I didn’t try any more updates after that. Perhaps it would work with additional updates or perhaps it might not but I am not taking a chance since this was a blessing anyway so why tempt it. It does have some issues as mentioned in other post. It quits unexpectantly sometimes but not enough to throw it out the window. I just save my project after any major editing, small price to pay. It also will not sync to updated photos or music but I just drag and drop or drag into finder and then import from my desktop. Again, small price to pay for such a good software to use. Movies I can import or drop directly onto a drop zone or insert a drop zone or add a movie by clicking on the + sign on the bottom left of the screen.
I hope this helps, it works for me for the time being. Like I said, I am running El Capitan so it was possible for me to run the old iDVD software. I am not really sure how to do it if you don’t have an old gray mac os x install disc but I just wanted to post and get this out there to let someone know that it is possible.
Good Luck!

In your separate partition, do you also have iTunes & iPhoto so that you can upload music and photos form them (to iDVD & iMovie), or do you add the images and music to your desktop and then just 'click and drag?
You seem to have a similar working technique as 'Old Toad', can you give me a breakdown on your working process please? I really like the idea of making a separate partition to enable me to use everything iMove HD and iDVD has to offer.
I'm interested in how you load your media to both iDVD & iMovie and what you then do with the finished product. Do you keep the movies and DVDs made on this partition or do you transfer them to your main partition via USB stick?
Also would you recommend Mavericks or Mountain Lion for this iDVD & iMovie partition as I have access to both?
Thanks
Steve
Let me see if I can understand here because I know how frustrating it can be. I am not sure what you mean by separate partitions, do you mean within my Mac as an external HD? I do not have a separate partition on my mac. Maybe I should? All the data (pictures, movies, music, etc) is directly off of my Mac HD not partitioned. After a project I will usually dump the photos and movies onto an external HD to save space.

iTunes seems to be in sync and working ok with iDVD. I go into the media in iDVD and find the song I like for the theme i am using and drag it say to the opening theme without having to drag and drop from iTunes.
iPhoto is not in sync so after saving say a slideshow project to my desktop from Photos, I click on the frame in iDVD that I want that slideshow to be imported to and go into File>Import and it imports it into my iDVD project. I use to be able to find it under the media section but again this is an older version of iDVD running on the latest update (El Capitan).

I am not using a separate partition as far as i know. It is all on the same partition coming from what is on my HD. Also, I have never used “Old Toad”. I heard about it but not familiar with it.

I load my media from whatever device my media has been captures, ex. camera, phone, usb, disc or something stored on an external HD. After my finished project, I burn it on disc or usb to be played at a party or wedding, etc. I then take the movie or project file and store it on an external HD. Slideshows don’t create an actual file per say because it is more like an arrangement of photos within Photos so there is no file to transfer.
I am not sure what you mean by main partition. Maybe if you have some experience with partitioning, you can share some of your experience and how to create them if that would be more beneficial.
Also would you recommend Mavericks or Mountain Lion for this iDVD & iMovie partition as I have access to both?
I never used Mavericks, I kinda decided not to jump ship off of Leopard back then so I don’t have any experience with that. iDVD did seem to work very nice with Mountain Lion. I think it is when i got to Yosemiti is when I started experiencing issues. I am using an old iDVD version because from what I understand iDVD is no longer available and isn’t compatible with newer software from Mac, that was from Apple. They told me to go find a 3rd party software but didn’t find anything i liked so i reloaded iDVD from my original disk from 2008.
Hope I answered your questions, hope this helps.
There are a couple of the newer, animated themes that do not work with El Capitan. There's no fix for it if you continue to use it with El Capitan. The only recourse is to get a partition or external HD and install Mavericks on it and run iDVD from there. You'll have to instal iDVD and it's themes on the Mavericks drive/partition.
My questions were directed to Ziatron which is possibly why they didn't make sense to you. Sorry if there was any confusion.
