Does anyone know if iDVD works with El Capitan?
It works fine. We can't access photos in a Photos library but can still access an iPhoto library or add a folder to the Media/Folders window that we can access from inside iDVD to add photos to a project.
Also follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

Thanks OT. That's just what I needed to know. I really appreciate the quick response.
OT, Disk utility in El Cap no longer contains a burn. Finder will burn but not a playable video DVD. iDVD used to burn disks directly right up to Mavericks. Something seems to have been done to finally kill off DVDs either for security or idealogical reasons.
I am currently playing with miDVD but any burnt DVD will not play on macbook whatever I try, they just show the audio-ts and video-ts folders on the disc.
I Dont need an answer just now, just to say burning in El Cap is a problem, and Toast is too expensive to try at the moment Unless I am sure it will work.
It is a mess that has resulted directly from the upgrade.

OK I just found out this was due to DVD Player.app not being associated with the disk. If I go to finder and run the DVD Player app first then load the DVD, it plays. This is what seems to have changed from Mavericks, as well as the burn action not being the same.
The burn disk image function has been moved to the Finder. Control (right) - click on the disk image and select "Burn Disk Image to Disk" from the contextual menu:
which will get you to this window:
There's also an open source, free app for burning disk images: Burn
I've just completed a test burn of one of my older video disk image files with the Finder and it burned and successfully played with DVD Player.
Yes it does.
In addition to the already mentioned Photos Library being not available, Chapter marker importing drops text in the name fields.
Other than these few minor quirks iDVD is still my first choice.

I've run some more tests since my last reply and have found that some of the newer themes, i.e. V 7 themes, are incompatible with El Capitan 10.11.2, like the drop zone in the Center Stage theme. I've had no problem with the non animated, older themes.
You are RIGHT! El Capitan is a pain in the A--! I have had nothing but problems with all I ave encountered. As the old saying goes "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!)
I'm sorry I did this. I wish I could go back to my old system and die a happy man!
How does one resolve this problem. I'm reading pros & cons as to wether idvd works or not.
OT,
I ran through all the Themes from the original to 7.0.
Not working on my system is Modern, Centre Stage (as discussed) Cinema and Bands.
The others in Themes 7.0 are fine.
Seems that the Drop Zones are non functional.

Short answer is Yes it does with some issues.
Even though it has a few quirks there are enough choices to work around problems.

That's what I'm finding.
There will come a time that iDVD will cease to work with El Capitan or the next system. As you've read here there are parts of iDVD that don't work with EC now. If your requirements are simple I'd try one of the free or inexpensive apps first.

If you want to do movie editing, and remain in the Apple club, (and I do) you've really got to keep a partition on your hard drive with OS 10.9.5.
That way, you can run iMovie HD 06 as well as iDVD, and Disk Utilities with zero issues.
