IMAP Accounts Won't Login

After upgrading to El Capitan, most of my IMAP mail accounts are rejected, with the prompt that I need to give my password. I do this but each account is rejected, with the message, "unable to verify login or password details".

These details haven't changed and I can still access the accounts with my android tablet, so I know the serveres for these accounts are working.

I've tried multiple restarts, checking ports and all settings multiple times and tinkering in the advanced options panel by turning the automatic setup option on and off. I've also tried deleting and re-adding one account afresh but I get the same error message. I am 100% sure the details I am giving mail about these accounts is correct, yet time after time they're rejected. The accounts all show up in the side bar (unconnected) and from what i can tell from snooping in my user library, the mailboxes themselves have transferred over, but no messages which were in the inbox appear.

My other Mac seems to have upgraded with no issues, and accounts from the same host (Dreamhost) are working without issue, so it's something specific to the upgrade process of this one mac.

I'm at my wits end with this, if anyone has any suggestions then I'm all ears, thanks.

Yes, there is another type of traffic affected. I have an Ethernet printer connected to my Airport Extreme, which means that I'm sending print jobs wirelessly to the AE. When the IMAP connection is down, my printer connection is also lost. Which gives me three symptoms:

  1. IMAP goes down.
  2. Airplay interrupts.
  3. Printing goes down

Have you found a solution?

I wanted to share some success I've had with this. Firstly, do check that your ports are correct. Whilst mine were, I've read from others who had this problem where their accounts used SSL (something El Capitan seems to default to) but the ports were set to the unsecured, Port 143. For most people, this should be Port 993 which is secure. Please check with your mail provider for the specifics, as whilst these were correct for my hosts, they may not be universal.

To finally fix the problem though, I deleted the password associated with the incoming mail settings of the account, saved the new settings and quit mail. Then I reopened mail and opened the accounts panel in mail preferences. Here I re-added the correct password and again saved the settings and quit mail.

On relaunching mail, the account is active and receiving email. I'm still the process of more thoroughly testing it, but so far my mail is back. I hope this solution helps others.

I am having a similar problem with my Apple mail. All other accounts connect fine. My Apple account does not. Here is what I getUser uploaded file

What does this mean exactly. I can't find anywhere what i need to change. This happened right after upgrading to El Capitan.

I have exactly the same problem. I have two IMAP accounts, and both work just fine for outgoing (SMTP) traffic, but suddenly after installing El Capitan, Mail was unable to connect to my incoming (IMAP) servers. Both of them, one of which is an iCloud account. My Mail Connection Doctor looked just like yours, but with two red dots, one for each IMAP account.

I opened a support case with Apple, and they did some detective work, but once we got to the standard hard-resetting of my Airport Extreme just to rule it out, the problem vanished. Everybody happy, case closed. However, after two weeks it was back. And now I get the problem once or twice each day. Very annoying.

In parallel, I've gotten problems with Airplay. I have a setup streaming music from my iTunes library to an Airplay-enabled stereo over my Airport network. This setup has worked for almost a year before El Capitan, but now I get interruptions in the playback, for typically ten seconds or so. iTunes is not the culprit: it keeps playing, so when the music comes back after a break, it'll start from the point where it should have been without the interruption. Something in the network seems to be fishy.

I assume these two problems to be correlated, since they showed up at exactly the same time, just after my installation of El Capitan. To me, this smells like some networking bug affecting both IMAP and Airplay traffic. And maybe other types of traffic too.

David's solutions helped me figure out mine.

I fixed the problem this morning. I did a few small things, not sure which was most important.

  1. I opened my iPad and looked at the smtp settings for the account, and quickly realized that el Capitan had totally scrambled some of these things. The server was wrong, so I typed in the correct smtp server
  2. The smtp port number was wrong, so I changed that. No idea if that was important
  3. and last night, I had noticed that the outgoing password field was blank, so I had filled that in

So probably the biggest issue was the wrong smtp server. It was from an old email service that I used with the same email address.

If you have a iPhone or iPad, copy those settings over to your Mac. Hope this helps others. Fingers crossed for you. Not having email really bites it.

I had similar problems, on top of excessive data usage by OS X Mail since the update to El Capitan. I'd like to add my findings, hoping they might help others:

  1. (Indeed) check all mail account settings and verify them with your provider. I found out one of the settings had to be changed because the provider had changed them without notifying me..
  2. If this doesn't help, do the check at the top of this page: http://www.needhelp4mac.com/2015/10/troubleshooting-apple-mail-in-os-x-10-11-el- capitan/

I Am not sure and how to go about fixing my problem. All my other accounts, gmail, yahoo, Att are fine. It is my apple IMAP part that won't connect. The SMTP part connects. I really don't know where to go to change settings or even what to look for. I have everything in the cloud and synced with my iPad. I noticed I am having problems with the Notes app. It is not connecting or syncing, it just has a spinning ball next to my email address in the top left column. Every time I tried to do a change or delete something it don't work.

I experience this peculiar problem as well with my only IMAP account (yahoo) - I have not been able to reset to POP3 mail when I upgraded from OS X 10.6.8 to Maverick, and I also encounter it on a newly bought MB Air. Tried to verify all server addresses and ports, but to no avail.

All other POP3 accounts do well but I had some - since disappeared - problems on some of those when I updated to 10.11.2 last weekend.

No, but after 10.11.3 or 10.11.4 I haven't had any of these problems. Instead, I've started having recurring problems with Messages and FaceTime. A couple of support cases led me to discarding some plist files, after which things have been better, but now and again I find myself having strange network problems related to specific functions. El C (or my new MBP) seems to be rotting from the inside.
