Mail cannot log into accounts after El Capitan

Mail repeatedly popup asks for both my email account passwords. When i enter them, it says "Unable to verify account name or password"

I have also re-entered the passwords in Mail>Accounts. Same results

But, I can sign into my Network Solutions webhost mail website with both the account names and passwords. Both also work perfectly on my iPhone Mail

So, the problem is clearly with Mail and the updates in El Capitan, since it worked fine for years prior to the update today

Hi, I spent hours and called Godaddy and they suggested calling Apple.

Finally, I got it to work. Not only for one account, but for all of my accounts.

here is what I did:

Getting Godaddy’s email to work on Mac’s Mail using POP

I have a couple accounts from Godaddy. I called Godaddy and they told me about what to change, like the ports etc. I tried and they still didn't work.

Here is what I did that worked.

Go into your Mail Preferences. (not "Add Account")

Once here, on the bottom of the window, you will see a + and - buttons.

Click on the + to create new account.

A window will open and click on "Other Mail Account" and hit continue

Under Name, type in what you want to call your email account and then enter your email address and finally your password. Then hit "Sign In".

A new window will pop up. Under Account Type, change it to pop (there is a drop down to switch from Imap to Pop)

Under Incoming Server, type in your info from your provider. For Godaddy it is: pop.secureserver.net

Under Outgoing Mail Server: type in your info from your provider: For Godaddy it is: smtpout.secureserver.net and click button: "Sign In".

The program will take a few seconds to find your server and then it will come back with ERROR message: Unable to verify account name and password.

Click on the "Next" button.

This closes the window. Now go back to your Mail preferences and select your new mail account, click on it once to highlight it. (you will be on Account Information tab.)

Look for "User Name" and type in your entire email address: Under that enter your password.

Then, at the top of the page, click on the "Advanced" tab. You will now enter your port. Check with your web host for this info.

For Godaddy, enter 995 and make sure that the Use SSL is selected. (at the bottom, "Allow insecure authentication" should be UNCHECKED.

Now here is the important thing you must do, at the top, you must UN-CHECK "Automatically detect and maintain account settings".

Close your Preferences window and you will get a message to SAVE and click yes.

That's it, your account will now work.

Hello darkmoebius

I presume you are on pop server IMAPs work fine). Here is a solution that worked perfectly for all my pop server accounts

  1. start Mail
  2. go to 'mail', 'preference', 'accounts' tab and further select the 'advanced' tab
  3. on the second half of the pane check for your correct Port #. It ought to be 110 for most servers not requiring SSL
  4. uncheck the 'Use SSL" box
  5. Check the "Allow insecure authentication"
  6. In the first half of the pane uncheck 'automatically detect....settings'
  7. Repeat for all your pop server accounts
  8. Close and restart mail
  9. It should cure the problem (you may need to do one more time a "connection doctor, take all accounts online)

After one week this seems to have worked!!!! Remarkable! I did close out mail and reinstall the account and it seems to work! I spent over 4 hours on the phone with Apple Care and Go Daddy and they offered nothing but blame for the other guy. To be clear I restored a POP account which would send but not receive. There does seem to be a quirk in the display in Apple Mail. It no longer segregates Sent and Trash with a distinct file for the POP account. But overall I am restored, I hope. Thanks!

JJMc32's Google account "create app specific password" approach fixed my gMail account's "password not accepted" message after installing El Capitan. Did not have to delete the account from Apple Mail or change anything else. I did turn on 2-step verification for the gMail account at Google a couple of months before I did the El Capitan install on my Mac.

I should clarify that what helped was the clearing of expired certificates. It did reset to port 995 and added SSL but small beer considering the problem. None of these other hints helped and believe me I tried them all. The fact that they worked for some and not others strikes me as odd. When I read a news report concerning expired certificates and non functioning MS apps it made sense to try it.

Thank you! Deleting my passwords for two accounts in the Accounts preferences of Mail, and also unchecking the "Automatically detect and maintain settings" box, then saving, running the Connection Doctor which obviously showed they're not connected to try to refresh things, and then turning that re-checking the box for "automatically detect..." and re-entering my passwords in Advanced resolved the issue. Thanks for the details and very helpful info. Any idea why Mail seems to randomly drop the settings?

This happened to me on both my iMac and Macbook Pro, running El Capitan, right around Jan 12. I use Comcast imap and my wife uses their PoP email, both were affected. Both were working fine prior to this date and continued to work on my Windows PC and our Pads/iPhones.

I changed some port settings and re logged in and it seems OK for now but it's almost like there was an update to Apple's email client that messed up the settings or somehow caused a conflict.

I had this problem with my Hotmail account earlier this month and it was down to OS/X mangling the account settings and losing the TLS certificate on the outgoing email configuration. I fixed that and all was fine for a couple of weeks.

So today OS/X just started giving me the "Update your Hotmail password" prompt, and when I re-enter the password I get the "Unable to verify username or password" response. Only this time around the Pop3 settings are correct.

So now what? iMy Pad & Android phone are still happily accessing the Hotmail account. Did MS change something? Has the certificate expired? Can I find the underlying error message in a log file somewhere in the system that might give me a clue as to the underlying problem?

These "Error. There has been a problem of some kind. Don't you worry your little head about it" type messages really irritate me...

I just finished a migration assistant to a new iMac and have 10 email accounts all of which could receive emails but not send emails. I was able to correct this by changing the ADVANCED settings in the email profile to MD5 Challenge-Response and used 587 as a port and added the password for each account Ihave. Also in the Account Information Server name needs to be mail.yourdomainname.com. This fixed all emails inbound and outbound. It's a tedious process if you have many email accounts Like I do but in the end they all work normal again.
