This is definitely another solution for the Mail crashing: plug-ins. I saw posted by something on this that helped my problem: I had the Virtru email plug-in. Once I uninstalled this Mail stopped crashing.

Chris

A quick summary of different solutions I've seen on forums for this Mail/El Capitan crashing problem:

1) Uninstall email plug-ins

2) to remove the folder: "com.appe.mail"

at: /Users/Home/Library/Containers/

3) to remove the MailData folder from ~/Library/Mail/V3

4) Disable all accounts and one-by-one add them back in

5) Press Shift-start Mail; Disable Gmail account

6) Microsoft Outlook issues (still unresolved)

I also had this problem. It was eventually tracked down to an email being sent to multiple addresses, created in Mailshot Pro on iPad. By switching off wifi as described here, I was eventually able to keep mail open long enough to locate the email in my "outbox" and delete it. That fixed it. I don't know if it's the multiple addresses or the original app that has caused the issue.
