this is happening more and more......my newMAC is a more of a mess with each 'upgrade'..with problems and crashes and unmounting of volumes....what the heck is happening to Apple?? Is it being taken over by microsoft people? Has the general public become beta testers? I can't even read my mail now or use time machine...Steve, where are you? HELP!!!!!!!!

For me the problem was specific to Gmail, El Capitan and Apple Mail. Mail just kept crashing overtime it tried to download email from gmail.

I solved it by deleting the Gmail account and setting it back up - yes it's downloading all my mail again which is a waste of bandwidth and space, but at least email is working again.

I tried all the methods listed above. None works for me.

Here is my solution, hope it useful for somebody.

1. go to ~/Library/Mail/V3

2. rename MailData to Maildata.bak (later can delete it)

3. disable all mail account (maybe optional, but gmail account seems cause mostly problem)

4. restart mail, it will import all the emails from other dirs under ~/Library/Mail/V3, for me, it takes about 30 minutes for 90000+ emails.

5. done, enable all the accounts, nothing lost including smart email box...

Good luck.

Hi all....

Unfortunately since updating to el Capitan when I select ONLY certain emails my email crashes (one Gmail account and one business account - my own domain).

As mentioned it's only when I select certain messages (or new messages). Even when the wifi is off and accounts are offline if I click on the certain mails it still crashes.

Any one better at this kind of thing than me??

Thanks in advance.

I had the exact same problem after upgrading to El Capitan.... and the above options did not work.

I then started just turning off things randomly in my system, to no avai, but then saw GPG in my System Preferences and realized that could be the culprit!

Sure enough, when I loaded the GPG System Preference, there was an update available. (current seems to be 2.6b2) I ran the update, and Mail launched just fine. Haven't had any problem since.

I have also followed many of the instructions here, stopping disabling and even deleting accounts. Whenever I reenable my exchange account however the timeouts and eventual crashes happen again. Email with this account worked fine in 10.10, and continues to work on other devices. I had hopped 10.11.1 would fix the issue but it has not. Apple still has some more work to do to get us back to what worked before...

I tried everything in this thread, twice. Mail was still crashing from my business email (my own domail, imap through godaddy). Deleted and added again, worked for a little bit but the outgoing server couldn't be accessed then crashing started all over. Everything worked when that acoount was disabled but as soon as I would enable it, mail would crash. FINALLY got it working, by turning off an auto response rule I had applied to incoming messages. Apparently after updating it tries to respond to all the old emails again automatically, and with downloading new messages simultaneously, crashes the app. Turned the rule back on after all messages downloaded and good to go! What a headache, seriously advising people to wait on updating their OS.

Mine just happened today. I had just set up the iCloud fooforah when this started. Given that, is there anything I should try now? Should I cut out the iCloud acct for now for *mail* alone? Going to try that, and I'll get back to you.

(In spite of all the suggestions given here, I'm not getting Mail to open without hanging immediately, which does prevent me from executing some of the suggestions. I haven't any gmail accounts, I don't have GPG, and I don't have anything fancy in Mail--and I was already backed up on email. Sure, I can attempt to read it on my iPhone, but...)

Also, two items in the latest presentation of Mail irritate me. My font seems to have been set to BOLD and there is nothing I can do to reverse this in Prefs, no matter how many times I try. The Sig files no longer offer the chance of rotating sigs--want a different one? Do it manually. I have 150 and growing.
