This sounded promising so also tried the same steps. All my accounts work, except the Exchange account. Even when it is the only account active it first hangs ("Checking for Mail...") forever and then frequently crashes out. This same Exchange account works perfectly in Microsoft Outlook and on my iPhone so I do not think there is a problem with the account itself. For now I have been using Outlook which has surprised me in ease of setup and use which is not what I remembered. Of course no support for caldav support to sync with my calendars built in yet...

In response to Bartelo TX

This worked until 5(ii) reconnect - my machine crashed as before but a bit slower to do so this time.

When I disconnected again and went to preferences the "enable this account" on the top one of my accounts had ticked itself!!!

I have tried several times and the same happens. I also tried switching the computer off in the hope that the account didn't self check itself but no.... so no success.

If I don't hear back from Bartelo TX then I'll try " Chris in NY's" solution.

I need to chime in here in hopes a lasting solution ever comes to light. I've was successful with BartoloTX's advice from page 1, but it didn't hold. In other words, I'm having the problem again now. So very frustrating. I rely a lot on my Apple Mail and all the mailboxes I've set up and archived messages in. For the record, I'm having the problem with a Gmail account. Like I mentioned, things had been working ok, but after having been away for a few days and launching Mail, I'm back to it crashing. I'm dying here.

Seriously Apple, again an update of an OS causes me a big delay in my work.
I need to send important emails to clients via a domain email adres. The domain email is linked via Gmail apps.
This is een service I pay for in order this email keeps on working ALWAYS.

I followed these steps, but it keeps on crashing om my most important email address.
So now I had to send these important emails via a normal gmail address... which looks like I'm an amateur...
I'm trying to run a business here. I spend a lot of money on apple products so I can properly do my work...
It seems like this company is slowly turning into the old Microsoft, where all customers expect a blue screen once in a while (including big smiley)

Please test your software better before you prefer it as an update.
It really ****** me off I can't do my job like it's supposed to because you didn't do your job right.

Greetings from an angry customer.

Note to Apple:

When are you planning to solve this problem?
All the information didn't helped. I cannot use my work email like I need it to work.

I really need some kind of response of you!
Your obviously corrupted update is costing me money at the moment.

I really hate that you let users work to solve this problem.
I will be waiting for your solution. It costs me to much time and effort.

My situation:

iMac Retina 5K 17" 4GHz

I got one normal gmail address for private mails & one work email address from google apps (own domain).
The second one keeps on crashing when I turn it on. It will also crash if I turn on the domain email alone.
I tried everything they wrote on this forum. I need to send important emails all the time.

So when can I expect a fix update?
And will you compensate me for for all the trouble I (still) go through?

You are right. Apple built its loyalty in people like us by making things work. Attractive design was no more than that. The point was that Apple products worked when rival products did not. We did not want to be desk-side mechanics and we never had time for that anyway. We still feel the same about that. After installing El Capitan, I thought I had solved the problem of crashing Mail – but I haven't. It keeps failing.

Apple needs to do much more than fix this problem. Apple needs to recover its corporate culture and get back to making things that always work. My advice to all Apple people, especially the senior personnel, is this: IMAGINE THAT STEVE JOBS IS LOOKING OVER YOUR SHOULDER."

Come on, Apple, you are losing us. Remember what you always stood for.

But first, get Mail to stop crashing right now, please.

I made the mistake of downgrading to El Capitan on my MacBook Pro and now my Mail app is unstable and, when it works at all, it's slower than USPS--takes days to receive emails. Given that I can still reliably and rapidly access incoming email using my iPad mini and iPhone 5s precludes server (I only use one) issues. I've tried the various fixes on this thread to no avail.

I guess I'll have to upgrade back to Yosemite to have everything working again. Hmmm, sounds a lot like...Microsoft. Where every supposed upgrade causes countless hours of lost productivity and gained frustration. The rationale for choosing Apple over Microsoft based garbage is rapidly approaching zero, especially considering the high cost of Apple hardware.

I'm pleased to inform you my mail problems have been solved 🙂

It was not easy to solve. I had to make a phone call to apple for 1 hour and 48 minutes in order to make it work again.
(you can find the number at support at the website)
At least I know for sure I'm not some moron who corrupted his own machine. Even Apple had trouble solving it.
According to the Apple care employee most probably something went wrong during the installation of the new OS. It is not a bug, because then everybody would suffer the same problems at the moment.

They showed me a trick to find out if the problem was in my user preferences.
In order to do so yourself you can create a new user account at system preferences.
Logon to this new account and install your mail app like your current one.
In my case it didn't crash on the two gmail account, so the problem had to be in my preferences of my user account

The solution:

A lot of specific user preferences in my user account had to be deleted to solve it.
It's too much to understand and to do it on your own. You also risk deleting stuff you don't want to delete.

So my advise is to make a phone call to Apple.
It will take a bit of your precious time, but afterward you're a much happier / zen person with a fully working mail app.

Also the employee told me they don't read messages on this user platform.
So my note to Apple (earlier message) was like screaming to a wall.

Hi

I don't think Apple has any intension of letting us not use Mail App, but I also had big problems with Mail App using sunrise account

My sunrise account is not extremely big but somewhat full.

Mail suddenly started to "unexpectedly close" a few days ago and the only way I can read/ answer mail now is using MS Outlook or Webmail.

I have now used Apple products since 1989. I'm not a specialist at all.

I checked HD (only 50% full, I checkt Activity list - nothing really uses the system expect Mail App (not responding))

I would prefer to use Mail App and hope Apple fixes soon.
