JPEG green in Preview.app on OS X 10.11

Hello everyone, that my first message here, i'm using a Mac almost 8 years and never has a problems that i can't solve by myself, but this time i tried everything and don't know what else to do.

I have a Mac Mini late 2014 (8Gb RAM, Intel HD 5100) with OS X 10.11, the problem is when i open JPEG photos(not every JPEG, more detailed i'll explain below) in a Preview.app the screen of Preview.app turns green like you can see in a screenshot below, some it times also crashes, i'll leave the crash report at end of a message

Does anyone have same Mac Mini with the OS X 10.11? i want to know if that is software bug or it's a hardware problem? any ideas what that can be?

Here a list what i have tried

  • I have installed twice clean OS X, that did not helped.
  • Checked with Apple Diagnostics and it nothing found.
  • Checked RAM with Memtest86 i did 3 passes that took almost 5 hours, no errors found.
  • If i "save as..." the JPEG that turns green in to PNG or TIFF then it opens normally, after saving it back to JPEG again it turns green...
  • As i said in beginning not every JPEG turns green, example any photos 15MP from my Canon 500D they all green, but photos from iPhone 4S they open normally, after that i tried to resize a photo from Canon 500D to 40%, after resize they shown normally, then i tried to resize iPhone photo to 300%, i expected that it will turn green after resize, but strange it still open normally, also a panorama photo from iPhone are green...
  • In a Safari.app every photo opens normally.
  • In a Safe Mode they also open normally.(maybe the problem is in rendering?)

Here if anyone want to try i compressed and uploaded 2 photos, one from Canon camera and one from iPhone(link)

Here is the the crash report of Preview.app (link)

Thank you

Alex.

The OSX 10.11.1 update has RE-introduced the problem , in addition to Preview no longer scaling JPGs properly when selecting Actual Size on large images.

Solution: set Preview / Preferences / Images back to "1 image pixel equals 1 screen pixel"

Pumping out largely useless updates has clearly become more important than making things work properly.

Same issue here, suffered a lot from the preview crash or green out while I am editing lot of pictures export from my Nikon DSL. The auto -update is not working as well when changing the 100% scale setting in preview->preference->images. Come on, I have reported this issue at least two weeks ago, and check the app store for update every days but till now nothing is fixed!?!

Apple is getting worse and worse, my iPhone 5s got update and now it is slower and slower, games crash, pause, no response, phone call can't pick up, lot of issues. Sigh.................

Wake up Steve.

Same issue with Preview App.

Mac OS 10.11.1

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013)

Issue submitted to Apple Support couple of weeks ago. No answer.

Offtopic: additionally I noticed, that in ElCapitan Preview has started to render fonts in PDF files differently (can't describe in details, fonts are now "thicker", "smoother" but in a bad way).

Hi, i ve got the same problem in my Mac mini. But probably it depends from a software bug about the latest El capitan up to date, I have also a MacPro 13" with El Capitan too, (but not with the latest up to date) and the same Jpeg photos in high res. open without problems.

I tried to do the kind advices posted: 1) change preferences about preview

2) change monitor resolution

BUT nothing change.

THE WAY that give me some results, it was opening file high res.(never worked) jpeg in PS, save it (also without any changing like post production) only confirm the best quality. This time the file in high quality will open also in preview.

I am not a software technician but a simply photographer, and in this case Apple does not help at all but complicate our job.

From an other thread in this forum (Re: Photo Preview is SICK (GREEN SCREEN) El Captain), post by BostonHarbor, October 13, 2015:

"I called Apple and got to level II support. I sent them examples of jpg images that opened with green screen and those that opened without a problem. They followed up with me today with this message: 'Green/grey screens when looking at jpg's in "Preview" is a known issue that we are working on. At this time there is no remedy. Please watch for updates.'"
