How well does iWeb work with El Capitan?

I've continued to use this old software with no significant problems with Yosemite, but plan on moving my website to another app fairly soon (probably EverWeb). However, I don't want to upgrade to El Capitan before I make this move if the upgrade significantly breaks iWeb.

Anyone have any experience with iWeb on OS X 10.11?

Thanks,

Dave

I haven't been following this topic, so I'm not sure where it came from, but you don't even have to change size of font or color to white. You can simply click on the font and reduce the Opacity to zero. I use that trick all the time to leave hidden text that can be seen by the readers that blind people use, but that does not need to be seen by sighted people.

Thanks, Richard. I just looked at EverWeb and Webbly. And Go Daddy. I am currently running 10.9.5. Is that MavericK? I don't even know how many updates I am off! I have an '09 Macbook so I don't push it. I love iWeb and I am not sure I am ready to start a new site again. 8 years into it now. But, I can see how it is an outdated system. There's a lot it cannot do as technlogy advances. I will consider EverWeb.

I too am in the process of transitioning over to EverWeb given its similarities to iWeb. Thus far, I can honestly say I'm very pleased with the results. Though I'm rather enjoying the process (given all the additional features EverWeb has) I find myself still needing to use iWeb, at least until I finish recreating my websites. I also very much wish to upgrade my Operating System from Mavericks (version 10.9.5) to the current El Capitan. That being said, I had this idea last night and would very much appreciate your input . . .

With everyone being so concerned over which version of OS X to use, given El Capitan's incompatibility with iWeb. Why not use both. One can simply install their current Operating System, such as Mavericks, onto a simple 8 GB Flash Drive (essentially making it a portable StartUp Disk) and then upgrade their computer to the latest Operating System "El Capitan". Unless I'm mistaken, this would allow one to have the latest OS X and Apps (photos, movies, etc.) for their day to day affairs and the Older OS X "Mavericks" for iWeb. Simply hold the Option Key when starting up / restarting your computer bringing up the StartUp Mananger and select the desired operating system. Below are links describing in detail as how to do this.

My, my, JyMy! You're certainly a lot bolder than I am on trying to toggle between two versions of OS. Let us know if you have succeeded and if you think it isn't a pain. This is clearly outside my tech skill level.

For what it's worth, iWeb introduced its one and only problem only with El Capitan [OS X 10.11] and still functions normally with Yosemite [OS X 10.10], so for some people the need to be absolutely up to date may not be that important. Then again, the only problem that was introduced with El Capitan can be resolved easily by importing Shapes from another program such as Pages, instead of from the iWeb Insert from the menu bar. Once one accepts that minor compromise, life can be like normal, at least until the next OS X update. Just say "no" ... at least for a while. And do share your frustration with "the folks who know best" at apple.com/feedback/macosx.html - it may not resolve anything, but, hey, it never hurts to try. That's what makes this country great!

Apple stopped updating and supporting iWeb about 5 years ago (last updated 2011). To my mind it is still the best and most simple website creation tool. It used to link up with MobileMe accounts for the blogging etc.. So it has gradually lost functionality. YouTube videos used to play within the page but now you can only make links to go to YouTube. It seems that with El Capitan the Shapes function is now defective but a work around written up on this discussion list is to copy Shapes from Pages or Keynote or some other Apple App which is currently available. I am using 3.0.4 which is available on this Apple website Download iWeb 3.0.4 which is OS compatible 10.6.4 and above

Charmian:

Thanks for such a thoughtful response to wabbie. I certainly agree with your observations.

As for the YouTube point... Although I use Vimeo instead of YouTube, I'm sure what I'm going to say is identical for both. When you create a video you have an option of obtaining the code as html code which you just copy and paste into an HTML snippet, which you get from the Insert/Widget pull down or the media browser. Try it, it's very professional and still works perfectly.

Hi Richard

That is what I used to do in HTML snippet and it worked nicely running the video within the webpage but I discovered in web browsing some of these videos had disappeared and now even though I have the url to copy into HMTL Snippet - nothing happens and the only way I can get the video to show is to link to YouTube which needs to be the Share information on YouTube not the URL in the browser as that apparently has personal account identifiers in it.

Charmian: Perhaps I'm taking you to literally, but you wouldn't put a URL into the HTML Snippet, but proper HTML code. Before replying, I checked to make sure everything was still functioning on my own websites - I have a lot of videos! But they work just fine. I've attached a screenshot that I made just now showing you a video as it appears in iWeb along with its HTML Snippet. Here is the code for that video. Try it out to prove to yourself that it works. Just copy and paste.

If you are having a situation where your videos are not opening in other browsers, such as Google Chrome, write back. That is a completely different issue.

Hi Richard

You are right.. And I am puzzled what happened - I was copying the "embed code" previously when it failed. I have just reinserted the HTML snippet and it is working again.. I had three webpages which lost their YouTube HTML Snippet link but now it is working again. I'll redo the other three again... so thanks...

Also I also wasn't able to play Quicktime movies from iWeb in Safari Browser in El Capitan but found a plugin on the computer is deactivated for Quicktime 7 in El Capitan and you just need to bring the plugin back into the active Safari folder. Hi Richard, your info is greatly helpful. I also Northern star seeking to you or everyone. iWeb with EI CAP, I did the update.

However, have you encountered the text box has malfunction with hyperlink. I'd to put another image link (hyperlink)box on top of the Text box to amok it work. Would love to hear if you or other iWeb friends have better way to combat this glitch.

Tons of thnx in advance.
