Handoff and AirDrop not working in El Capitan

After upgrading to OS X 10.11 El Capitan, my Handoff and AirDrop stopped working between iOS 9.0.2 on iPhone 5S and my MacBook Pro Late 13. I've tried logging out of iCloud account on both devices numerous times, it didn't help.

For my friend with MacBook Air and iPhone 5S with same iOS version it works flawlessly.

Did anyone encounter similar issue, and if so, how did you solve it?

Hey there AlexWoodblock,

I understand that you are seeing some issues with AirDrop and some Continuity features like Handoff as well. I have a couple of suggestions for troubleshooting these issues, the first of which can be found here:

Tips for sending items

If you don't see the recipient in the AirDrop window or sheet:

  • Make sure that both devices have AirDrop turned on and are within 30 feet (9 meters) of each other.
  • If you're sending to an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:
    • Your Mac needs to be a 2012 or newer model with OS X Yosemite or later.
    • The iOS device must have Personal Hotspot turned off in Settings > Cellular.
  • If you're sending to a Mac:
    • If the receiving Mac is using OS X Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion, it needs to have an AirDrop window open: choose Go > AirDrop from the menu bar in the Finder.
    • If the receiving Mac is a 2012 or older model, click “Don't see who you're looking for?” in the AirDrop window or sharing sheet of the sending Mac. Then click “Search for an Older Mac.”
    • Find out if the Mac has “Block all incoming connections” turned on in Security & Privacy preferences. A Mac won't receive items using AirDrop if this setting is turned on.
  • If AirDrop on the receiving device is set up to receive items from contacts only, make sure that both devices are signed in to iCloud. Also make sure that the email address or phone number assocated with your Apple ID is in the Contacts app of the receiving device.

So I resolved my issue. I also tried to turn iCloud on and off on all my devices with that not working. What I did instead was to create a new user account, logged into iCloud in that, and that allowed me to access all handoff and continuity functionality. I then had to copy in old files from my old account or allow iCloud to sync so that was annoying, but if you've already turned off iCloud and toggled it on, there isn't much to lose by trying this as well.

Actually in my case all handoff / continuity features just work (phone, message, facetime, apps).

What isn't working is Airdrop (i.e. sharing photos or documents vice versa mac and iPhone or iPad)

Can anyone confirm the same? So this seems to be two different issues....

P.S. in the mac console I see all kinds of activity related to airdrop (without any warning or error, it seems)

Hello All,

Handoff is also not working for me on my Late 2013 13" rMBP with 16 GB, 1 TB, OS 10.11 and iPhone 6 & iPad Air2 both with iOS 9.0.2.

The prior installation of OS 10.10.5 Handoff worked as expected with iOS 8.4.3 (or whatever the last version of iOS 8 was).

Bummer! At least I don't depend on this feature but answering the iPhone on any device is kind of cool!

I've lost all Continuity/Handoff and AirDrop. The former I don't use too often, but AirDrop is crucially important to me as I'm a news reporter who often has to upload/edit video and photos on the road. I AirDrop from my iPhone to my Mac and then edit and send it on so it can be published on the web. I've cycled BT, Wifi on/off, restarted devices, even reset the SMC on the Mac.

Everything worked until I migrated to El Capitan. No handoff/continuity and most importantly for me, no AirDrop. AirDrop is one of the reasons I keep all-Mac/iOS hardware – so it all works together and I can go from device to device easily. They better fix this soon!

AirDrop has been screwed the moment they've released Yosemite and they've done nothing about it ever since. They didn't care to address this issue even though it's affected almost everyone. It's a full scale nonsense that they spent more time on implementing useless things, polishing things most of us won't use in a lifetime, but paid no attention whatsoever to a major and long persistent system scale issue. It's very disappointing that Apple seems to drift towards Windows with their development line regarding their own bred OS.

Go no further, apart from the still screwed AirDrop functionality and the strictly rhapsodic working-not working Bluetooth connection with Android devices, El Capitan seems to have issues with Adobe Flash as well, my MacBook Pro froze and rebooted twice in an our since I upgraded, always when I was playing videos on full screen. There's more to the story here.

I also face the same problem with the airdrop of El Capitan. Connectivity seems to work OK though.

My iPhone 5s and iPad mini can "see" each other on airdrop and transfer files between them without any problem. None of the iPhone or iPad can "see" the Mac book pro with El Capitan OS nor the Air drop on the El Capitan can see any of the above devices.
All devices are updated to latest version OS.
Tried many suggestion posted, none of them fixed the problem.

Apple has to fix this problem and until then should let us know that is aware and is working on it.

I tried really everything. Resetting SMC and NVRAM. New Account for iCloud too. And i set up a new and clean installation on my iPad and Macbook pro. Nothing helped. Still the same thing. iPad and iPhone working great with airdrop, handoff and personal hotspot. Nothing with OS X 10.11. Looking forward for the next OS X Update, hoping it comes really soon. Its frustrating!
