Handoff and AirDrop not working in El Capitan

After upgrading to OS X 10.11 El Capitan, my Handoff and AirDrop stopped working between iOS 9.0.2 on iPhone 5S and my MacBook Pro Late 13. I've tried logging out of iCloud account on both devices numerous times, it didn't help.

For my friend with MacBook Air and iPhone 5S with same iOS version it works flawlessly.

Did anyone encounter similar issue, and if so, how did you solve it?

Hey there AlexWoodblock,

I understand that you are seeing some issues with AirDrop and some Continuity features like Handoff as well. I have a couple of suggestions for troubleshooting these issues, the first of which can be found here:

Tips for sending items

If you don't see the recipient in the AirDrop window or sheet:

  • Make sure that both devices have AirDrop turned on and are within 30 feet (9 meters) of each other.
  • If you're sending to an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:
    • Your Mac needs to be a 2012 or newer model with OS X Yosemite or later.
    • The iOS device must have Personal Hotspot turned off in Settings > Cellular.
  • If you're sending to a Mac:
    • If the receiving Mac is using OS X Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion, it needs to have an AirDrop window open: choose Go > AirDrop from the menu bar in the Finder.
    • If the receiving Mac is a 2012 or older model, click “Don't see who you're looking for?” in the AirDrop window or sharing sheet of the sending Mac. Then click “Search for an Older Mac.”
    • Find out if the Mac has “Block all incoming connections” turned on in Security & Privacy preferences. A Mac won't receive items using AirDrop if this setting is turned on.
  • If AirDrop on the receiving device is set up to receive items from contacts only, make sure that both devices are signed in to iCloud. Also make sure that the email address or phone number assocated with your Apple ID is in the Contacts app of the receiving device.

What parts of continuity is your mac supported for?

requirements at bottom of page

if your Mac is not on these lists but meets the hardware requirements you need to hack it because Apple doesn't want your Mac to work.

Fixed it!!

The problem of Airdrop not working started when i updated OS to El Capitan.

I was able to see my iPhone in the Airdrop tab on my macbook but i was unable to see my macbook when i wanted to share files from my iPhone.

Go to Settings (on your iPhone) >> Control centre ... Then toggle off and on "Access within Apps"

Straight away Airdrop started working again...

Okay,

this has been bugging me. I've got a macbook pro (mid 2012) on El Capitan, a Macbook Air (Mid 2014) on El Capitan and an iPod touch 9.3.1.

Air drop problems:

Macbook Pro: Connects to iPod Touch

Does NOT connect to Macbook Air

Macbook Air: Does NOT connect to either devices.

So I'm guessing it's a problem with the Macbook Air at this stage. (I'm just going to add a note here saying that before I've never had to use "search for an older mac" before when connecting the two macs)

I've connected both macs with the bluetooth and they both come up on my devices and I can see they're connecting but for some reason the airdrop function still does not work. I've tried turning the bluetooth off then on, shutting down and restarting, making sure the date/time settings are identical, making sure I'm discoverable by everyone and signing out of iCloud and logging back in again. Nothing changed.

I'm going to add another note at this stage to say that when I first upgraded to El Capitan, everything worked normally, so I'm not sure why this has suddenly stopped working.

I know the two macs are talking to each other as I'm using safari on the macbook air and there's an icon on my tray on the pro that mirrors what I'm looking at. I don't care about handoff (unless this directly affects airdrop) as I never heard of it before airdrop stopped working.

So in other words... if somebody knows anything... um... help?

I hope this may help you. Faster than before.

What I did with mine is.

Steps

1. Turn Off the Bluetooth of your Mac

2. Go to, just press COMMAND + SPACE BAR then type /Library/Preferences/

3. Just find com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and then delete this.

4. Now, Turn On Your Mac Bluetooth

5. Open your Wifi Router on your Browser

6. Then Go to Wireless Settings

7. Change Security Code from WPA to WPA2

8. Quit your Browser

9. Try to use Airdrop now

Thank you!

I had the same problem on my macbook air. I reset the PRAM and it started working flawlessly.

Thanks everyone, it helped me to finally solve the problem.

I followed the following steps.

  1. Shut down your machine. Yes, all the way down, not sleep or logging out.
  2. Press the power button and then press command-option-p-r. ...
  3. Hold those keys down until your Mac reboots again and you hear the startup chime.
  4. Let go of the keys and let your Mac reboot normally.

I hope this would help other as well.

Enkay...
