External hdd won't eject properly since El Capitan

27" iMac, 13 2, fusion drive, OS X 10.11 My LaCie back up drive's icon turns green after the first back up is complete but I can't eject it, except by forced eject. If I force eject it, then turn it back on, it will perform another back up but stay orange when it is done. Any one else have this problem?

I normally do 1 back up a day, then eject the disk and turn off the drive instead of leaving everything on at night. Any help at all would be appreciated as I am a creature of habit and resist change.

Well done Eviscerator but all of that is a bit much for me so I will continue as is until Apple fix it. It does not give me any hassle and now I have become used to it as I can fix quite easily when I get the window come up by going into TM and out again and all is as it should be. Think Apple have given up.

Yes I did about 6 months ago.

I am beginning to believe after all this time the problem will only be fixed at the new OS release in Sept!

Like EVISCERATOR, the 10.11.4 update fixed the problem for me--consistently and on multiple machines.

Wish I could report the same, fssbob. Going through this thread, you'll see I'm not the only one on 10.11.4 still experiencing the issue, unfortunately. 😟

I have 10.11.4 and No it is not fixed, been having the problem several times a day and fortunately for me it is not that big a hassle just annoying. Maybe 10.11.5 will fix it..here's hoping..

As I felt in my last post, now that I am running OS 10.12 Sierra, the time machine and external hard drive issue with El Capitan have been resolved.

I was hoping for that as well but unfortunately the problem persists.

It is not as annoying as with the last ElCapitan update which was the worst I have experienced but Sierra has not done the trick in my case. Sad.

I admit the external hard drive and Time Machine are not as they were in Yosemite, but it is better in Sierra than than El Capitan.

Well you could just be right on that as mine has not happened today as yet. Last week before Sierra it was going crazy then after update it was better and so I have my fingers crossed that it could settle down. Time will tell.

I am sad to say that after a week of Sierra, my time machine does backups only every 6 to 8 hours not as before hourly. So, need this fixed.

It seems to be related to encrypted drives?

Ever since i encrypt backup, it fail to unmount. Always need to restart to unmount properly.
