My Mail, since the upgrade, has gone mad. I can't send via my own website account.

Also email addresses I used to have - and deleted more than a year ago - showed in Mail when I opened it.

I have noticed other people have similar issues since the upgrade and have posted separately.

I am having same problem on Mac mini. Upgraded to El Capitan 10.11. Use Apple Mail to get mail from yahoo/verizon account. I have rebooted multiple times and that has not helped. Talked to verizon. All settings correct. I am happy to go in and delete and re-add the account. TWO QUESTIONS.

1) WHICH account do i delete and re-enter? the VERIZON.NET mail account or the YAHOO mail account? (see screen shot below)

2) Will i lose all my Apple Mail folders and all the filed emails within those folders if I do this? (Already backed up whole system, so if i would lose them, maybe easy to reinstate them)?

THANKS! have not been able to send mail from my desktop Mac for 3 days now. having to use my iPhone for all outgoing mail (or could do directly from yahoo web mail, but i like to use Apple Mail). ugh. thanks for any help.

Just a note - this totally worked for me, THANK YOU, but a note to some that you once you to to "edit the smtp" you may have to click on the "advanced" tab there, to enter your password. Hope I am describing this correctly. Anyway, thanks for your help. This was SO CRAZY and it has come to be that I just dread Apple OS updates. So far, in different years, they have 1) erased all my appointments and birthdays on my calendar 2) lost me all my contacts and now this. Just really upsetting. I appreciate so much what computers do for us, but the time lost and stress sometimes feels like the big payback.

Thank you that worked!

  1. Disable and re-enable your iCloud email.
    • Go to the Apple menu > System Preferences > iCloud (3rd row).
    • Click the checkbox next to Mail to disable it.
    • After waiting for the checkmark to disappear, click the box to turn Mail back on.
    • You can close the System Preferences window.
  2. Set your outgoing email server.
    • Open Mail.
    • Click the “Mail” menu and choose “Preferences”.
    • Switch to the “Accounts” tab.
    • Choose your iCloud account from the left column.
    • Look for “Outgoing Mail Server” on the right and switch it to “iCloud”.
    • Close the Preferences window to return to Mail.

That should do it! If you have a lot of email in your iCloud account or a slow connection you may need to wait some time for your email to re-download, so don’t worry if your email inbox is empty for a few minutes.

I had the same problem for my exchange settings in Mail. I deleted and added my account details several times as in each time it works fine for sometime and then it goes offline. What i am trying now is in Preference/Accounts/Advanced option I un-ticked the option for "automatically detect and maintain account settings" as i discovered that each time Mail changes the account settings that I have inputted for my exchange mail. Hope this is a permanent solution to my problem :-)

Thank you very much Wolfrockporthcurno, your instructions has restored icloud back to mail.

My ongoing problem, however, is that I deleted my outlook account before realising there was a wider/bigger problem and now, whatever method I've tried to add it back, I still receive the 'unable to verify account name or password' error message. :-/

Any suggestions gratefully received. I love my Apple products (and saw the Steve Jobs film on Tues - yeah, worth seeing I think even though my tix was a freebie preview apparently) but gawd, they don't half know how to frustrate the **** out of me on times!!!

When I went to delete my account, it said it would delete ALL of my data.

Does that mean all the emails I have saved in various folders will vanish?

I can't afford to do that. Also, I seem to have IMAP and POP forms of my

email accounts now. I have no idea why they seemed to "duplicate" after

this 10.11.1 El Capitan update! HELP!

Unfortunately none of the fixes work for me. My mail accounts were all set up fresh in EC.

To start with I upgraded to 10.11.1 a fortnight ago. mail in a second user account would not migrate properly and that user account became unusable as did the primary shortly after Resulting in erase and Internet recovery Back to 10.10.5.

I upgraded again with only one account and set up the second user account and its mail within 10.11.1.

As things stand, I can receive mail and reply to mail from all 4 accounts but I can only send mail from iCloud.

Nothing I do alters iCloud from being the default account.

thanks for suggested fixes, unfortunately they haven't worked for me.
