Just updated to El capitan, now I cannot send emails from each of the different accounts I have, I can only do it select one favorite server which is absurd ?

My Mail, since the upgrade, has gone mad. I can't send via my own website account.

Also email addresses I used to have - and deleted more than a year ago - showed in Mail when I opened it.

I have noticed other people have similar issues since the upgrade and have posted separately.

That option is greyed out for me. Can't select it. Sigh...

In the meantime, I called Apple Care, and they had me

get rid of the two email accounts that were POP, and

keep the same two as IMAP. I hate this arrangement!

I will call today to get them back as POP accounts.

[I tried to go from IMAP to POP on my own with a nice

description from another Q&A on the forum, but it

didn't work for me. Onward and upward!]

AppleCare did the same thing with me -- deleting email accounts, and then putting them all back in. HOWEVER... All the accounts are now IMAP, and I think I prefer POP accounts. That doesn't seem possible anymore. The AppleCare tech didn't know if that was a Google problem or an El Capitan problem. I agree with duckndilly -- this was disappointing that it was so much work!

It is a pain but, not hard to resolve.

Go to settings and find internet accounts

delete the existing account - use the minus sign

then re-add the account using the plus sign

It's usually simple to add an account e.g gmail account - simply enter email address and password and it should auto find the rest

if struggling you can always contact Apple online support people who can talk you through the process

Good luck

Thank you this totally worked! What a pain it is that upgrading to El Capitan did this.

One thing to add is to make sure you quit Mail before you do the above, or you won't see that it worked and then get frustrated. 😠 I know because I was going to throw the computer when this didn't work, but thankfully thought to quit before throwing computer.

My situation is worse and weirder: After I upgraded to El Capitan (2010 MacBook Pro, I could receive but not send any email. I would hit "send", I would hear the whoosh, the mail showed up n the "send" mailbox, but it never goes to the intended recipient or to me (I always bcc myself). Furthermore this happens with mail I try to send from my iPhone, which has nothing to do with El Capitan! I deleted and reinstalled mail on both devices with no improvement. I tried variations on my account name. I quit mail before reinstalling accounts. What to do?

Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts

Select the problematic account.

Select > Outgoing Server Settings.

Click on the drop-down list and choose "Edit SMTP Server List"

This should bring up a window with a list showing the mail accounts.

Select the problematic account.

Confirm Account info is correct.

Click on the Advanced tab and disable "Automatically detect and maintain account settings"

Your password may be missing here. Fill it in.

Click OK.

My mail sent immediately.
