El Capitan Wakes From Sleep

I have latest 15" MBP and just upgraded to El Capitan. I have noticed that since the upgrade MBP wakes up from sleep even with a closed lid, no attached input or output devices of course. In fact the device was quite hot inside my laptop bag that I started to worry -- So it is not only a usage issue anymore, but i do not want components overheated inside a non-circulating small place like a bag, especially the battery, which is a highly flammable chemical as we know of...

Anyways, Power Nap is disabled while on battery before you suggest that one. Now I try to turn off different devices like BlueTooth and Wi-Fi to see if there is a relation and a workaround.

In the meanwhile, please if anyone has a suggestion, even how to try to tackle down the problem?

Ok so I have done few tests, it seems there is something to do with WiFi (or Network in general?).

  • BlueTooth on or off does not make a difference
  • WiFi turned off, everything is fine, On, wakes up constantly
  • So then went a bit further on WiFi:
    • When There is no known WiFi (I mean no SSID was ever connected to), then sleeps deep and well
    • When there is a known WiFi with correct credentials to use that, then sleeps perfect
    • However, when there is a known WiFi SSID with wrong password, it just keeps trying even in his deepest dream...

So if you have similar issue, if your MacBook constantly wakes up and consumes too much battery while supposedly sleeping, just try to turn off WiFi and let me know if that helped for you or not?

I upgraded recently and have 10.11.1 but still seem to have the same problem. I have checked the Energy tab under Activity Monitor none of the apps seem to be preventing sleep.

I also changed the power settings to disable "Enable Power Nap" both on battery and power adapter. I also disabled the "Wake for Wifi".

I still cannot have it sleep. Is there a software Lunesta so it can sleep ? 🙂

Turned off wifi, still kept restarting in closed sleep mode. Turned off bluetooth devices waking computer, nothing. Removed nano receiver for wireless mouse, nothing. I noticed that it only restarts every 10-15 minutes while closed if I have no apps running at all. I'm going to try leaving apps open and seeing what happens.

This issue has been persisting for over a month now, thousands of Wake reason: ?'s, and opening the lid of my previously fully charged to find it dead after several hours is quite frustrating.

I have played with turning off bluetooth and wifi, independently, and combined, with no result. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for testing all these scenarios. Your conclusions were spot on. After leaving for work one day with 100% battery and not ending up using my MacBook, I was perplexed when I opened the laptop after returning home and having a battery of 30%.

After reading your thread, I realized my user password changed for the WiFi at work. Today, I made sure to open my MacBook and update the WiFi password, then subsequently put it back to sleep at 95% and back into my bag. Just opened my MacBook now, 8 hours after putting it back to sleep with the updated WiFi password, and it is at 93%. It must have been repeatedly trying to connect to the known WiFi at my work using incorrect credentials.

Thanks for figuring it out!

Here are some specifics of my situation:

-MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) running El Capitan

-WiFi ON (never turned off)

-Bluetooth ON (never turned off)

-Power Nap OFF on battery

-[left Dropbox running as well]
