I recently upgraded to El Capitan from Lion. iPhoto and Aperture were not loading and I was prompted to update in the app store.
After clicking on the update tab I was told "Temporarily unavailable. Try again later."
Everything in iLife that needed an update did, except for Aperture and iPhoto.
Any info is appreciated.

Did you try it from the "Purchases" tab and not the "Updates" tab?
It will only work, if the button besides iPhoto says "Install" and not "update". Move all installed incompatible iPhoto versions to the Trash, disconnect all backup disks. Spotlight must not see iPhoto as installed on your Mac. Then restart the App Store and hope for the Install button instead of "Update".
I love iPhoto, it is easy to edit any photo's and keeps the original. I don't mind upgrading to photo's but also want to continue using IPhoto. Have upgraded my macbook, and can no longer use IPhoto - so WILL NOT be upgrading my IMac!
There should be a warning that it will stop IPhoto working - or an option to let you continue using it.
Very disappointed as the photos editing is non -existent - so you have to edit on another programme. I do use Elements, but IPhoto was good for minor adjustments and sharing to Flickr etc....
Have you tried to update by reinstalling, paula?
If iPhoto is showing in your Purchases History at the App Store you can update, as described by Barney: Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS X 10.10.3
It was a temporary glitch at the AppStore that made updating impossible, or Apple reconsidered:

Have had a looking the App store and it says 'paused' if I click resume, it says temporarily unavailable?
How can I reinstall it - as have looked at other links on here, but the webpage says this option is no longer available.

Does Photos show in your Purchases history? The "Updates" tab of the App Store is no longer supported. You can only update by reinstalling, iF iPhoto is showing on the fourth tab, "Purchases". Does it?
If yes, open the Launchpad, find the partial iPhoto download, hold down on iPhoto until the app icons start to wiggle, then press the "x" to uninstall.
Launch the App Store again, and iPhoto should now show with an "Install" button. Press "Install".
The install button is there, but if I click it it says:
We could not complete your purchase -The product distribution file could not be verified. It may be damaged or was not signed.
Looks like Apple may have stopped people re-downloading!!
You could try to disable temporarily the checking of the certificates. perhaps the certificate of iphoto has expired.
See System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General.
Allow to install apps from everywhere. But change it back to "Mac App Store and identified developers" after you got iPhoto installed.
I just tried to install iPhoto again from the German App Store and it is still working. Took four minutes to download and it is running well.

That is a pity! Then the store in your country has a damaged version. Which country are you in, so we can compare notes with others who are having the same problem.

What would you think about reverting to Yosemite? Do you think this would allow me to re-install IPhoto?
I am not sure, what is blocking the download in your case. If it is indeed caused by the new "System Integrity Protection" in El Capitan, that is preventing you from installing older software, reverting to Yosemite might help.
If you have a spare external disk, you could try to boot into recovery and reinstall Yosemite on the external drive. (OS X Yosemite: Revert to a previous OS X version). If you can download iPhoto on that system you could copy it over.
But I am not sure, if El Cap is he culprit, since I could download and install iPhoto without problems right now.
Hi. Do you know if doing that would stop my system from constantly flagging up that I have "1 update" that can never be updated...
