Q: El Capitan screen split mode does not work for ms office?

I tried to split view as advertised but was not succeeded with Ms Office applications - Excel & Word. What is the issue? Am I doing anything wrong; or issue is with El Capitan OS or maybe Ms Office has to make changes in their software? Thank you.

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014), OS X El Capitan (10.11), Upgraded yesterday to El Capitan

That is because MS Office apps do not have a fullscreen option, they only have that little green plus sign, therefore cannot be used full screen/split screen.

I hope this issue is going to be resolved soon. I was waiting for the El Capitan to enjoy split screen view of Ms Office and other apps. Apple Team, please assist in this matter.

What's weird for me is I was able to use the split screen with MW early friday- 10/2 between 11am and 4:30pm but now i get a note saying that MW is not available full screen when I attempt to click on it. It feels as if someone tampered with the software, why does it not work all of a sudden?

The only way it's going to be resolved is for you to upgrade to Office for Mac 2016.

The Office 2011 applications do not support full screen mode. That's a design choice by Microsoft. (Actually, it's due to the fact that Office 2011 pre-dates full screen mode in OS X by several years. Now that Office 2016 has been released, don't expect to see it added as a feature to Office 2011. The best you can hope for for Office 2011 is maintenance and security updates for a few years.)

Yes. It works for everything except Outlook, which doesn't support Full Screen mode.

I recently bought Office 2011 for Mac. I don't think this is the only way out to go for Office 2016. When launching new OS, apple's statement was not "split screen will work for some apps and for some not". It was designed to split the screen for all Mac apps. Logically, I have Office for Mac and it has to work in Mac's new OS properly. Btw, full screen works on Office 2011 when I click the green circle. Disappointed for now

That is Microsofts responsibility to make their apps compatible with any OS update.

Alpha and Beta versions have been available for year and it is Microsofts decision

to expend their efforts on new software instead of old software.  If you want to complain

to any one, complain to Microsoft!!!

I don't want to complain, I want resolution. That is why I am here in Apple Support. Thank you for useful post.

Apple can not fix a design issue with Microsoft's applications. Go ask Microsoft to resolve it. I'm sure you'll be told that is has been resolved. All you have to do is upgrade to Office 2016.

I cannot get split screen to work with Office 2016 on my MacBook Pro Retina (15 inch late 2013 - using El Capitan 10.11 and Office version 15.14). I have no problems doing split screen with other apps, its only Office 2016 that won't let me do a split screen. From my perspective, its definitely an Office 2016 issue on my machine. Happy to hear that its not an issue on yours though.

Contrary to what is being said elsewhere, full screen works for me too (MS Office 2011/El Capitan) in all MSOffice applications. Split screen does not work for any, except for Onenote, where everything works. Therefore there seems to be no obstacle to make split screen work.
