Preview not showing JPG Images

After updating to El Capitan, when i open a JPG Image, its window is completely black. (Doesn't Happen with PNG or other files). The thumbnail shows the image OK but the main window is black.

Has anybody seen the same? any solution? I tried to delete the preferences plist for Preview but didn't help

I have a similar problem with Image Viewer 8.1 (877), when displaying jpg photographs.

They are displayed, and after a split second, they are overlayed by a solid green color.

The same images do not pose problems in Photos. Neither with Pixelmator.

Screen dumps from iphone-6 or iPad 3 in jpg formats do not show any problems.

There's an associated problem in iBooks Author, also showing a green overlay on "html-widgets" during editing (gone after export to iBooks format). In this case, the green overlay is produced by a png-file from a screen dump.

Image viewer has a tendency to crash, when opening a jpg file.

Your comment on size, seems to be correct.

I read the problem-jpg into PixelMator and saved it as a 4592x3448 pixel jpg file. Image Viewer displayed the green overlay.

I saved the file as a 2296x1724 pixel jpg file. Image viewer displayed no green overlay.

Same file. Same creator. Different sized jpg's. Where the exact limit is, has no real interest to me, but you're on the right track. These quite normal jpg camera files should pose no problems in modern software. I hate it, when some developers get inspired to "think for themselves" ;-)

I've experimented a bit, and on my jpg the key-size is 4364 pixels. Above, the green overlay exists, i.e. 4365 pixels, and dpi 120, 180 or 240 makes no difference. The value seems quite arbitrary, since 4364 not divisible by 8 (one byte).

Let's hope, Apple gets its act together. My bluetooth (Apple) mouse is also acting up (did work on Yosemite and earlier), so... sigh...

I'm seriously contemplating switching to Windows for my portable gear (Asus UX305FA instead of the port-cripled Macbook 12 and louse screen on the Macbook Air 11). Apple's software displays a growing amount and too many "personality defects" (read bugs) in the yearly iterations of Mac OS X and iOS (the version 8 and version 9 releases have been disasters for me, and now OS X 10.11 also starts to show "dementia" and "general degeneration" ;-)

It's a pity, that marketing and fashion has taken over from development and quality. Maybe the Apple leadership should concentrate less on wristband colors, than actual software usability and reliability.

Version 10.11.1 did not solve my problems.

Some images, that earlier showed a totally green overlay, continues to show the overlay.

Some images, that earlier showed a totally green overlay, now show a split overlay (something akin to 40% green, 40% real image followed by a green overlay for the remaining image in horisontal direction). Like this resized screen dump example:

User uploaded file

I haven't discovered any system for this, specific deviation between 10.11.0 and 10.11.1.

Some images, that earlier showed a totally green overlay, now do not show the overlay. I haven't discovered any system for this, specific deviation between 10.11.0 and 10.11.1.

Problematic images still have a tendency to - periodically without any obvious recognizable system - crash the program instead of displaying the complete or partial green overlay.

Affected images are consistently 4365 pixels or more wide. But now at least some are displayed without the green overlay. Alas... this is not really good enough.
