Finder crashes when entering time machine

Since the upgrade to el capitan, I've been unable to enter time machine. The initial screen is displayed for a few seconds and then it disappears. The console reports that Finder has crashed and a crash log is produced. In a nutshell the error being reported is:

Application Specific Information:

*** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSRangeException', reason: '*** -[__NSArrayM objectAtIndex:]: index 0 beyond bounds for empty array'

terminating with uncaught exception of type NSException

I have since run first aid on the drive in question (and it is a network drive). It seems like backups are happening, but I can't see them and if I can't restore from them, they're rather pointless !!!

Any one with any ideas and/or clues as to what I should be looking for ?

I my case, time-machine is still working.

Strange...

The only idea i have in your case is to use the preferences that were recreated when the system recreated the Library-folder.

What happens if you move files that are related to the finder and spotlight from "Library_new" to your Library-folder and log out and in again?

@others: Is your time-machine still working?

A few more ideas:

- does your time-machine work with another or new user-account?

- did you check that your backup-drive is ok? Be warned: Disk Utility may take some hours...

- if you have more than one user: Did you log into them after upgrading to El Capitan?

otherwise you will see Spotlight-related problems

- did you recreate your spotlight-databases using "sudo mdutil -E"?

Yes, when I logged this with Apple, that's what they told me to try (with a new user account) and it did work.

Yes - to the best of my knowledge the back drive is fine AND it's still backing stuff up. It's also been checked.

Yes. Did that too.

Last point - no. But I've not (yet!!) had any spotlight issues. I've also been having issues with iTunes too and I think that the best way forward for me is to bite the bullet and do a clean install. However, because this machine is used for work, I cannot do so until I have enough free time (because of the software I'll have to reinstall after). That probably won't be until week-end after next.

Thank you for taking the time to help !!!!
