El Capitan will not restart or shut down.

El Capitan will not restart or shut down after I installed it on my MacBook Pro. It simply hangs up and does nothing and I have to manually shut down by holding the power button down.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11)

I just wanted to add my kudos to the list. I had given up on solving my inability to shut down or restart. I've been putting up with it for nearly a year. But recently, I came back determined to fix the problem. I had gotten rid of my digidesign application files a long time ago to no effect. Someone in this discussion suggested removing the hidden digidesign kext files. That did the trick. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I had the same issue and just had solved the problem. It actually freezes due to the activity of BambooCore / Wacom softwares (if any). Terminate / delete this activity from the Activity Monitor during the freezing of your Shut Down process. It should be back to normal shut down again (worked for me!)

And oops, it's 2016. Hope this will (still) be useful.

Thanks! I don't know if it will last, but restart is working again. I had leftovers from Digidesign in my system folder. I deleted them since I no longer have the app on this computer. The restart worked beautifully! I've had this issue for a very long time (sometime after upgrading to Yosemite) and the only thing that had worked previously was to start in single-user mode. This no longer worked today, but your solution did. Yay!

Yes. Manually removing all of the obsolete Avid, Digidesign, Pro Tools, MBox 2 files, drivers, plist items and keck files did the trick. This was the process I used and my Mac is healthy again. Apparently these obsolete files were creating the hang with OSX 10.11.6
