El capitan freeze during install

My 2013 MacBook pro has frozen during the install.

1. I downloaded from the app store and began the install process.

2. The computer rebooted for the next step of the install process

3. The white install bar is frozen at 90% Fans are running at top speed.

What should I do?

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5), iPhone 5s, MacBook Pro

You can try stopping the MBP with the power button. Once it is stop for 20 seconds or so power it back up again and see if that helps.

I've crated a bootable El Capitan USB stick and tried to perform a clean install on MacBook Air 11" (Early 2014). The installation is done to my thoughts. But when the Mac restarts, it is stuck in the boot screen having a progress bar about 80% complete.

As I have erased my SSD, I can't use the safe mode technique. Now what should I do?

I'm new to MacBook. Please help me out 😟

I am so tired of all these bugs in Mac's computers.

I have been a windows man for many years, but 2 years ago I started to buy apple products. Imac, macbook, minimac, Ipad, Iphone.

Now I am in the midst of getting new hardware to some of my staff an myself.

But we will go back to windows computers, as Apple does not take the operating systems in a loyal way to users, as they just release new OS without being sure its working correctly.

Now I have a crashed Mac due to upgrading to El Capitan. So much waste of time. I have had it. No more Apple products.

Also a lot of bugs for MS office pack in Macs. Many thing does not work proper. Dont know if its MS fault or Apple, but we dont have time for this waste of time anymore, as we also need MS office pack for business, as its more durable than apples mail and pages etc. Those not good enough when wants to communicate with the rest of the world in terms of docs etc.

I believe that Apple will now loose its market share due to all these irritation things. Yes apple products looks good, but if its not productive for business, then no good. !!!

best regards

Johnny

I See you show solved which is good. Unfortunately mine is not yet solved. I have tried everything here. The install bar is stuck at 90% under the Apple logo. I cannot enter recovery mode or access the choose start up disc page. All the possible start up key options just goes to the same locked up page. At this point I am feeling that my option is to do a clean install on a new HD and then reload my stuff from time machine.

My El Capitan install to an external disk was hanging repeatedly. Usually it would start the installation saying I had 17 minutes left and then, after hours, would hang between the 12 and 10-minute mark. Meanwhile I inherited a Macbook Pro 2011 and, after successfully installed El Capitan on it, was finslly able to successfully install El Capitan on the external (firewire) drive.

So why the difference? I'm not sure. Both machines were already running El Capitan (I wanted to also install it on an external drive to test a third machine). The machine that failed to install El Capitan to the external Firewire drive was a MacBook Air 2011 that was running :

  • OneDrive
  • Dropbox
  • iStat Menus

And had software installed that may have made a difference:

  • Chrome
  • Firefox
  • Office 365
  • VLC
  • iWorks
  • Steam
  • Mainstage

Hope that helps.

I had the same problem on the following model with the May 2016 El Capitan update:

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)

I was banging my head against the wall for days trying everything listed on this forum and others. I finally found a solution which is as follows - i really didn't' expect these issues with an Apple product:

  1. First of all before attempting any software update, as always ensure you have a decent Time Machine Backup in case it all goes wrong.
  2. Initially I was getting the update freezing about 75% though the final stage (black screen with apple logo an white update bar);
  3. After reading on this forum, I created a bootable USB drive with the new El Capitan software installed (download form App Store etc - many posts on how to do this on the forum and web and the benefits of doing so);
  4. After using the bootable USB stick to get to the OS Utilities screen, I then went into Disk Utility option and erased/formatted the Macintosh HD hard drive - name the drive as you wish it to appear when you hopefully install the new software update;
  5. I then went into the OS Utilities menu options and shut down the Macbook Pro.
  6. I turned the Macbook Pro on and pressed the OPTION key - this should bring up the drive selection option - I selected my previously created bootable USB stick drive;
  7. Follow the installation instructions;
  8. VERY IMPORTANT - on my machine i tried installing and turning File Vault option ON. Install froze. I repeated the process and ensured file vault was turned off when prompted in the set up procedure. This time I opted ot try the Migration option to copy files form my Time Machine backup - this all looked good until very last moment and again the update totally froze. This time with a grey background screen, after entering the user login details;
  9. FINALLY - I repeated steps 4-7 above, this time I ensured file vault was off and didn't use the Migration option;
  10. My update completed and the only drawback was having to manually reinstall various apps, files etc. This was just a simple drag and drop from the Time Machine backup folders onto the newly named hard rive on the Macbook Pro.
