Brother Printer Issue with El Capitan
Is anyone else having a problem staying connected to a Brother printer that is network connected after El Capitan install?

What model Brother printer are you using? Is it AirPrint compatible? If so, are you using AirPrint or the vendor driver? If it is the vendor drivers, what version of the driver is it? How is it connected? Have you tried deleting and re-adding the printer? Resetting the print system and re-adding the printer?
Hey John,
Thanks for the response. It is not an AirPrint comparable model. Work model MFC9460CDN. I have tried all you have suggested and it still eventually disconnects from the printer.....
Hey Swills1,
Sorry none of that was any help. Have you talked to Brother? To see if they know about this issue? Or sent feedback to Apple?

Sorry again I don't have any other suggestions.
I have the very same problem. Printer constantly drops off the network. I just spent an hour with Brother technical support and they say it is an Apple problem.

I have exactly the same issue with my Brother HL-3170CDW model. Since I did the update to El Capitan my iMac and Macbook Pro are not able to print via AirPrint. The printer constantly drops off the network. It's like a tennis table game between Apple and Brother. Who do we have to trust... in the meantime it's a nightmare for just printing a simple page!
Since upgrading to El Capitan I am also having problems printing to a Brother HL-5250DN and a Brother MFC-9340CDW, both networked. Sometimes it will print, other times it says the printer is not responding. I have deleted and re-installed drivers, and also reset the printing system.
Brother web site indicates the 5250 is not supported under 10.11 (but still prints fine, when it connects). The 9340 is supported, but has the same problem (actually get the "printer not responding" message more frequently with the 9340).
After some experimenting, my iMac11,2 (which is linked to the network by an ethernet cable) has no trouble printing to either printer. My Macbook8,1 is the one having the issue with the printer not responding. Both are running OS 10.11.1.
It looks like this is not so much a printer issue, as a new form of the wifi/network issues from Yosemite.
I just upgraded to El Capitan -- what a BIG mistake. Not only is my email messed up and not working, but my Brother HL-2270DW wireless printer does not respond, even after redoing all the connections and software. My old mac (with older software) works fine with it. But my mac book pro now can't find the printer.
Apple, really... this is getting to be like WINDOWS. Not good at all.
I am having the same problem. Even after resetting the printer and downloading latest driver the problem persists with Brother HL-2270DW printer, MacBook Pro can't find the printer.
Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to tell you all I found out what the problem was. I sat on the phone with an incredibly patient, and kind Apple Support person, who guided me through everything, and we found out what the problem was.
I had installed an anti-virus program. In my case, it was Norton Utilities. This totally messed up my Mac. Actually, the last time I used Norton Utilities about 10 years ago, it also messed up my mac then. So I uninstalled it, and ..... everything now works perfectly.
Try uninstalling any anti-virus software you have.
Good luck to all of you. I'm amazed that this one thing was the cause of all my troubles on El Capitan. Now everything works just perfect.
So, no more Norton.
Cheers!
Nope. Works fine. There is an updated set of brother drivers recently from Apple though
I have the same problem but I have never had an antivirus on my machine. I always install new os with a clean install and nothing carried over from old os. I can get my Brother printer to work if I reset my printer settings in the System Preferences, repair permissions via terminal and do a system restart. However this only lasts a day or so before I cannot print anymore and the process starts all over again. I have switched out modems to see if it was that but no difference. I can print from a windows machine on my network but my mac with os 10.11.1 will not work properly over any period of time. Not sure what to do to fix this. Any thoughts?
Make sure you don't have any sort of software that checks incoming or outgoing data, such as Little Snitch. If you do, remove them.
Restart your mac.
You may also want to check that your iCloud preferences and log in is correct and functioning.
Good luck!
I had the same problem and spent more hours than I cared to in order to resolve it. Apple finally acknowledged that it was a problem and suggested that I wait until updates were available that would work. Finally, this morning the person that I spoke to at Brother helped me install the appropriate firmware on my Brother printer. Now both of our computers are able to print more than one time.
HI all,
I've been having this same problem with my MFC8850CDW for months after installing El Capitan. Incredibly frustrating. Installed latest printer drivers, reverted back to older drivers . . . nothing worked (either directly connected via USB or over Wifi. Everybody was recommending I trash my printer and buy a new one, but (a) what a waste and (b) if it's El Capitan and or a driver problem, that might not solve anything.
Then, I read the post at the bottom that Judith103 solved it by updated her firmware (googled Brother MFC8850CDW firmware to find the download). Tried that, and my printer printed right away, both over USB and via Wifi. So, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it continues. Will update this post if it doesn't.
