OS X EL Capitan crashes and shuts down my computer 2-3 times a day

I installed OS X EL Capitan and since the install my computer crashes and shuts down 2-3 times a day. There is no logic or pattern to these crashes. Anyone else having this issue?

MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2013), iOS 9.0.2

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.

Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Thanks for reviewing the Panic Report. I did get to the Apple store today and had a clean install done. Also had assistance with the back-up to avoid putting any potential issues back on the machine. I will see how things go after the MBP has an extended sleep tonight. I'm not sure what "an internal hardware problem" means but I was told to return to the Genius Bar if the problem has not been eliminated. I will say that EtreCheck is absolutely clear for the first time since using that software.

Install Yosemite, if possible, and run the Mac with sleep and hibernate and test. From How to identify MacBook Pro models - Apple Support, MacBookPro12,1 is a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015), which originally shipped with (from OS X versions and builds included with Mac computers - Apple Support )

Yosemite can be installed on an external disk using How to install OS X on an external drive connected to your Mac - Apple Support .

If the same problems show up, then you may have a hardware issue. Mail has its own fair share of bugs.

Loner T:

[OT]: New 27" 2015 5K Retina iMac with 1TB Fusion drive. I hosed the Fusion setup - long story. l don't know how to restore it. SSD and HDD are now separated. No Recovery HD. Had to re-configure with OS X installed on HDD using Network Recovery, but still no Recovery HD and Disk Utility did not restore the Fusion drive (which i think it is supposed to do.) Any ideas or help or am I stuck as-is? If you have some thoughts on the matter leave me a note in the lounge and we'll chat. Thanks and Happy Holidays.

To the others here I'm sorry for the interruption.

Monday AM MBP woke from sleep and DID NOT CRASH (clean install at Genius Bar yesterday). However, after starting Safari and reading for 2 minutes, the screen went black. Hitting any key, as directed, brought back the finder and there have been no problems for 30 minutes of browsing. (I did perform an Apple Hardware Test last night and the report generated said: No issues found, Ref code: ADP000. I am including this AM's panic report for your inspection with the hope that it will give you some clue as to what's w wrong. Then, back to Genius Bar for ??? Thanks for your support. Carl

a freed zone element has been modified in zone kalloc.160: expected 0xc0ffeec634952fbe but found 0xd0ffeec634952fbe, bits changed 0x1000000000000000

This generally indicates a possible RAM problem.

RAM tests that pass do not mean that the RAM is good. It just means it didn't find a problem.

Try fully testing the RAM with this program: http://www.kelleycomputing.net/rember

Have it check all RAM and run 2 or 3 loops.

As it isn't a signed app, you'll have to right-click on it and choose Open, then click the Open button in the warning dialog.

If it finds anything, take it to Apple as you cannot swap out RAM on that Mac.

Dec 21, 2015 5:24 PM in response to CardsFaninExile

CardsFaninExile wrote:

Unfortunately the Rember Tests results were not supportive of RAM problems. I ran a single pass and a 3-pass with the same results: "All Tests Passed!" Any other thoughts?

No, sorry I don't. But, a passing RAM test is never conclusive. The problem may not be evident in the tests, or it cannot test all of the RAM.

With all of the randomness, I wonder if it is a problem somewhere in the logic board. I think you may have take it to Apple.

As they will probably have you do it anyway, you might as well backup and erase and install the OS. Don't install any software or hardware and see if you still get the problems. If so, then I would take it to Apple (or an Apple certified repair center).

Dec 29, 2015 5:38 PM in response to Barney-15E

Barney, you hit the nail right on the head. An Apple senior advisor recommended I send the MBP in for repair which I did over the weekend. They were extremely prompt using FedEx overnight/priority. Today, I received the computer with the Product Repair Summary showing that the logic board was replaced. I will now see how things go for the next few days before I give my blessings to this MBP but I am encouraged by their repair of the item you suggested might have been the problem.
