Adobe Illustrator CS5 Crashing

I am having an issue ever since installing El Capitan. When using Adobe Illustrator CS5, any time I attempt to use the Eyedropper tool, the program will crash as soon as I click on the object I'm trying to copy the color of.

I have noticed that I am able to use the eyedropper successfully ONLY when copying the color of a SOLID color object. If I attempt to copy the color of an object with a gradient-fill, or copy a color from an embedded image/photo, the crash is immediate.

The issue is happening on both my Macbook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011) and my iMac (24-inch, Early 2008).

PLEASE help. I am very reliant on using Adobe Illustrator for my job.

Any advice will help, or if you are experiencing the same (or similar) issue let me know so I can avoid anything that will cause the crash!

There's also Affinity Photo on the MAS. It has gained some very good reviews. I'm not a shill for the company: just a satisfied customer!!

I have CS6, and have been using Adobe products in professional print publishing since the late 90s. But when they introduced subscriptions, I decided to look elsewhere for when CS stopped working. Ironically, now that PDF workflows are so embedded, there's no need to rely on specific software products for content creation.

The Affinity team also have a DTP app planned for the end of the year, apparently. For me, CS6 still works on EC, but it won't work on OS X 10.12, because EC is the last OS to support Java 6.

there are several alternatives to Illustrator,

they may not all be mac compatible buy could possibly be viable with Windows boot if you have it or though Wine for Mac

If your looking to replace photoshop there is also GIMP -, totally free. While terribly named it's hugely popular with game modders who work with open source and free software

SO every time I go to save or pdf my CS 5 ai file 15.1.0 the program crashes. A remedy

I read said change the default printer to pdf maker - but it doesn't work. ALL my

ai files crash when saving.

This has never happened before with this program an not on this computer.

I'm running Yosemite 10.10.5 - came with the computer less than a year

ago and I bought CS 5 because it works with this OS.

I can't be on cloud because I work remotely often.

Now since I've made pdf maker my default - PREVIEW crashes on OTHER

documents! *** is going on here? If Adobe is trying to get me to upgrade

they can just forget about that.

Adobe has never claimed CS5 will work with Yosemite, let alone El Capitan and as Apple continues to change core tools under OS X and in doing this some software will become either inoperable or incompatible.

Photoshop CS5, 5.1, 5.5 and 5 extended are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5.7 to 10.6.8, after that it's a crapshoot as to it working or not.

And you can work remotely with cloud.

I'm not trying to sell you cloud, I hate the ********* thing but is the only thing supported by Adobe for OS 10.11 and it is the only thing they will ever fix in the event something is broken. CS 3,4,5,6 will work for some, not for others. Adobe is not going to address a CS5 issue, they won't even support CS6 any longer and if Apple releases a version of the OS that remedies incompatibility it will not be because they knowingly or intentionally did so.

If you can roll back to an instance of your OS that was stable with CS5 it may be your only choice for compatibility, you will need a Time Machine backup with that instance available to you. Otherwise try one of the following

Create a new administrative account, boot into that account, run CS 5

or

Remove CS5 with the Adobe Cleaning tool on their website, reboot, remove all external storage devices and reinstall CS5 from the original media and then update.

it is highly advised you BACK UP YOUR COMPUTER before you do anything.

The Adobe PDF print queue hasn't worked for years. I think Snow Leopard broke it! But you shouldn't need the print queue to create PDFs from Illustrator or most other Adobe apps.

I urge you strongly to look for alternatives to the old software you are using. As said earlier, Affinity Design is a decent professional replacement for Illustrator; Affinity Photo is a decent, professional replacement for Photoshop. Other apps from that stable are scheduled in the next year or so. If you need a PDF print-to-disk print queue, use CUPS-PDF. That's free.

I found a workaround that might help.

In my situation, I only experience the eyedropper crash when sampling a gradient fill. (No crash when sampling a solid fill.)

I have found that If I create a swatch for the gradient, I can sample the swatch without incident, to duplicate a gradient's attributes.

None the less, I still save more often than I used to...

Good luck!
