ios 9 automatic download making me furious

Is there any way to prevent auto download of ios updates other than the general settings option for updates which does not impact ios updates but only app updates?

Here's the scenario: I have satellite isp and the forced auto download of IOS 9.0, 9.0.1 and 9.0.2, on multiple ios devices, have utilized all my paid bandwidth for the entire month effectively putting me and my business offline unless I purchase more bandwidth.

It's an issue every single ios update but the rapidity of recent updates and owning multiple ios devices currently have magnified the impact punishingly. This has been complained about for years has never been addressed other than forum posts online suggesting non-solutions like "filling the device so full of data that no more fits", jail breaking my devices, or apple store staff suggesting "disabling wifi", which is akin to a car dealer suggesting one can save gas by not driving ones car after you buy it.

Yes auto up date if off, OFF, OOOOOFFFF, OOOOOOFFFFFF!

Any suggestions disabling ios auto downloads and allowing full functionality of my devices is welcome.

A consideration offered by apple to somehow compensate for all the additional bandwidth purchases over the years is also welcome.

The logic beyond this function is beyond me. Why auto download if its not desired and not requested when the consequences can have such annoying and costly results. I also wonder how many public wifi networks have been steamrolled this month by every apple device trying to download all these updates. Its just impolite at best!

End of rant. Productive comments appreciated. Thanks!

Meg St._Clair I totally agree with your comment. I'm a developer and programmer. I'm pretty tech-savvy. I actually specialize in Apple devices. My husband laughs at my "Apple Shrine." I frequently have my Macbook Pro on while using my iPhone and taking notes on my iPad Pro with my Apple Pencil while listening to music on my iPod Shuffle or iPod Nano when my Apple Watch chimes a notification. Non-technical? I beg to differ.

To the people who don't want a feature or security update, I can't help but ask - why? I mean, I always delay it for a week or so to identify bugs. That's protecting your investment. But beyond that, why fight the update? The updates are not unreasonably often like Adobe and Microsoft. And the updates include security fixes that Apple has deemed necessary.

I try to keep to only two screens at a time. I often fail. 😎

^ can you stop spamming the forum with your "comedy" it's unhelpful and not even funny. This issue obviously doesn't apply to you, so be on your way.

Back to the topic: for people annoyed by the auto-download of iOS updates on their iPad, you can put the iPad in flight mode when charging and it won't automatically download the updates. I know this doesn't help those with iPhones who want to receive calls when charging, but in that case you could disable wifi when charging. Or do what I did, sell your iPhone and get something better and more configurable and less annoying and less controlled by "daddy knows best" phone manufacturer.

Be careful in your understanding of English language. I mean no insult at all by saying:

Apple IOS is typically designed for those business/non-technical users.

"Designed for business/non-technical users" does NOT mean "all Apple users are of business/non-technical type". In fact, I am using Apple myself and I am a very technical person.

The desired interpretation is that Apple does not want users to go too deep into low-level technical details, that is why they isolate users from those low-level technical details regarding the device. But sometimes they are doing too much, and many technical users get frustrated due to too limited degree of freedom over the device. For example, silently downloading large amount of data without users' consent/permission/awareness is very very bad, at least they should provide an option to disable that. I believe if Steve Jobs is still alive today, he will surely not allow this, because it infringes upon user's right and freedom.

The same holds for the god-**** firmware signing window which forbids user from downgrading to older version IOS. Well, it is the users' device, users' Wifi subscription bandwidth, and users' choice. If the user does not like to upgrade IOS version, why do you force them to download the update??? If the user is not satisfied with the new version IOS, why do you forbid them from downgrading to an earlier version IOS???

So the correct way is to always provide an option whenever some changes might infringe upon users' right/freedom, and focus on improving IOS itself so that users are willing to upgrade IOS in order to enjoy the new features and functionalities, instead of being forced to upgrade unwillingly. But that seems very unlikely to happen because Steve Jobs has already gone.

Since you seem to think you know better than Apple how to run one of the most valuable companies on the planet, you should definitely send them feedback telling them everything they're doing wrong:

You should also consider either getting a jon at Apple so you can get yourself into a position to change things or, start your own company and, with your success, prove them wrong.

Bset of luck.

Ummm - Steve Jobs is the one who defined the iPhone, including the way updates work. Invoking his memory for every little thing you think is wrong at Apple is in bad taste, and, in most cases, wrong, because the Apple culture is the product of his vision and direction. It didn't change suddenly (or even slowly) with his passing.

If your saying that Apple (as a company or even if you mean simply iTunes/iOS) are the same as before Steve Jobs passing, I could not disagree more.

I have been an apple user since 2005, I had only the new VIDEO iPod at the time, accessed it through my windows PC using iTunes and I loved it! but to put it nicely I no longer Love iTunes, and now I ask myself why is this? and I think if at all possible Steve will be back if things don't change for the better!!

by the way I am now in possession of an iPhone 5 and 6 and iPad3 and an iPad pro! but I have not been converted from my windows PC to a mac, I was considering it before Steves passing, again can you tell me why is that?

PS please don't concider this a chalange to you from me because it's not, but I think I would like reading your reply.

I have not read xuancong posts or yours save the last one, and I just wanted to add that I think it is entirely possible for apple to get some valuable input from xuancong (and me and you) I suspect that's one of the reasons these forums exist..

Then you would be incorrect. These are user-to-user technical support forums. Apple doesn't read them. If you have feedback for Apple that you actually want them to read, use the feedback page:
