Mac mini 2011 cannot set proper resolution for LG ultra wide 29 monitor.

I recently got a new LG 29 inch monitor for my mac mini 2011. However, I tried everything but the highest resolution I could get is stilled 1920x1080. Is there a way to achieve 2560x1080?

I have tried what others have suggested, a mini-display port to HDMI. However, it does not work for me.

Any suggestion will be helpful.

DVI only support 1920x1080 and HDMI only supports the same at 1080p.

Check to see if that monitor has a Display Port input..? If so, then you need to get a MiniDisplay Port to Display Port cable.

Hi, I am aware that HDMI supports only up to 1920x1200. So I grabbed a mini display port/thunderbolt to HDMI adapter that supports up to 4K. And then connected a HDMI cable that supports 4k to my monitor. It did not work. Then I grabbed a mini display port to HDMI that supports 4k from amazon, which some other source suggested that will work. However, it still didn't work. The 29 inch LG I had only have 2 HDMI ports so display port is not an option.

So the problem now is I tried every method that I could find online but no changes.

TL;DR I tried the method you mentioned. And it did not work.

As I said before, with only HDMI input you are limited to 1080p for your model mini

Which resolutions are supported on Macs using HDMI?

The HDMI port supports up to 1080p on HDMI connections. With the HDMI to DVI adapter, the HDMI port will work with resolutions up to 1920 x 1200. Mac Pro (Late 2013), MacBook Pro (Retina, Late 2013 and later), iMac (27-inch, Late 2013 and later), and Mac mini (Late 2014) also support 4k Displays.

Apple does not offer their own MDP>HDMI adopter. This Belkin on

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Belkin-Mini-DisplayPort-to-HDMI-Adapter/16685842

says 1080p max

This Moshi one

says it supports 4K but only for computers whose MDP/Thunderbolt ports supports DP 1.2 or TB 2. You Mini has a TB 1 port and is imited ti 1080p via MDP>HDMI adopter

Hi, thank you for your answer. However, as a computer science student I did not trust your answer in the first place and gladly I did and now I have solved my problem.

Yes the HDMI converters you mentioned does not solve the problem. And I can confirm with the Moshi one since I owned it and tested it. But there is a kind of converter called Active adapter and in specific this model I picked up on Amazon worked fine.

Now I am able to achieve 2560x1080 on my mac mini 2011 through mini display port through a active mini display port to hdmi adapter and through a hdmi cable that supports 2560x1080. And it now works like a charm.

Hey mate,

is that adaptor still working well for you? I just scooped the same LG ultrawide screen as you and also can't seem to get the proper resolution with my 2011 iMac. I'm glad you posted a link to the exact item you bought! I just thought I would check in to see if you are still good to go, as well as to express my thanks for this thread, as it seems like it will save me some grief. Thanks!
