Time machine backup not running

My Time Machine backups aren't running automatically. I can do a backup using the "Back Up Now" menu item, but they won't run automatically.

Any ideas what to try?

The window appears because of the bug & should not do so once the bug is eliminated.

As to whether Apple engineering has noticed it, they almost certainly use debugging methods capable of stepping through the startup process & capturing the state of the machine at arbitrary intervals or at breakpoints they assign, so I would not worry much about them missing it.

I have just read a post by someone on another forum running 10.11.2 beta that the bug appears to have been fixed.

I just upgraded to 10.11.2 public beta (15C31f) and I can also say it appears to be fixed here too.

The update appears to include an EFI update (maybe related?) and I left the UPS connected during the update/reboot and immediately upon completing the update a TimeMachine backup started as expected and just completed.

I'll keep monitoring the backups but I'm pleased so far.

Note - if you have a NAS (like a Synology or WD MyCloud) it appears to have corrected the SMB connection problem there too, maybe my network Time Machine backups will start working quickly again...

I noticed that strange window at startup too! Time Machine did not backup for weeks (I've recently bought an APC UPS and the USB was plugged in, of course...) and it didn't complete any backup either. At some point (about 60 GB out of 300) the remaining time starts growing to 20+ hours.

I tried disconnecting the USB and everything seems to be back to normal.

Moreover, I noticed that the screen backlight settings was resetting back to maximum at every reboot. Anyone else noticed?

This was happening on a 27" iMac, mid 2010

Acenry . . . Yes, I also noticed the backlight reset on my iMac and posted it elsewhere. Must admit that I had not connected that issue with the presence of the USB problem with my APC UPS which I share with everyone else, but now you have mentioned it, since I have been running without the USB connection to the UPS, I realise that the backlight problem has also disappeared . . . how bizarre!

Me too. Been watching this problem on my own box for over a month, but just now taking a moment to address it. Wiping the Time Machine drive and starting over doesn't fix it, and neither does precautionary PRAM, SMC, and PMU resets, or fix disk permissions, are safe boot. The logs are all silent about the failure to backup. I believe it's definitely a 10.11 bug. I'll file a report even if it's a dupe.

Update: I'm also on a UPS, and see the promising posts about 10.11.2 and running Airport Utility.
