I keep getting a purple window around my Photos app on El Capitan.

Anyone else getting this or know how to turn it off?

Hi guys,

I've attempted to follow your directions to fix this glitch, but I'm not a programmer and finding it difficult to follow the instructions. I have found the 'terminal" program, but not getting any response when i paste the fix into it. Could someone please break down the steps for me? Thanks!

If there is anyone in Apple interested to look into patching this up, this app is probably the first really big mistake in my last 13 years of Apple loyalty. Mourning the loss of Aperture, feeling patronised by the iPhone edit tools and 3rd party apps that are meant to make up for it, can't fathom the loss of Events and the ability to organise my photos how I'd like them ... and on top of all this, we have glitches that I have never experienced with Apple and remind me of my PC days. I check for updates in the Appstore only to find an update to iMovie, which I swapped out for FinalCut years ago and this makes me wonder if you are planning to get rid of every golden goose in the professional app department. I can hear Jobs turning in his grave!

  • Quit Photos.
  • Open the Terminal.
  • Copy and paste the command below into the window at the prompt, then hit the return key. The command is a single line, even if the webpage is showing it on two lines. Wait a moment for the prompt to appear.
  • If you have problems to force quit the Finder, simply restart your Mac.

defaults delete com.apple.Photos NSConstraintBasedLayoutVisualizeMutuallyExclusiveConstraints

It should look like this in the Terminal:User uploaded file

My (dumbed-down) Photos app was running fine. It wasn't until I started using my new iPhone 6s that the purple debugging frame (purple-gate) reared it's unsightly purple specter. When I clicked on the iPhone in the sidebar that the problem surfaced. It coincides with the new phone. It never happened with my previous iPhone 5s. BTW, the terminal tip solved the problem. What other anomalies lurk under the hood of El Capitan? I ask myself.

Here's my beef: Within 5 minutes of using my new iPhone 6s with Photos I have been stricken with the undeserved PURPLE DEBUGGING WINDOW. I hope I have made myself clear. It is related to the PHOTOS app (I am running EL CrAPITAN on a Mac Mini - which I mentioned in my tawdry post above)

Please fix this BUG in the next update. I don't have a technical question hidden anywhere - Just a keen observation of a perplexing BUG which has landed me in this forum. All I want is to stand and be counted, and I hope I won't have to stumble across other system anomalies after future system patches are made available.

Ditto.

And again no one here will or can fix anything and this is not a place for "beefs", to stand up or to be counted - it is a place for experienced users to help inexperienced users and once again the solution to the "purple banner" issue was posted here - follow the directions

This kind of statement is neither useful nor constructive. I for one appreciate when someone else identifies that they have the same problem. Why? It tells me that it is not an internal problem but a common issue. That's the first step in fixing the issue. Now I can eliminate internal issues and deal with a software glitch. And in this case, that appears now to be precisely the problem since users like geoMac have likewise reported that this began with 10.11.

So, by all means, voice your "beefs" folks, because it helps the rest of us narrow down the issues.

geoMac's comments, as I pointed out, were very constructive. Maybe not for you, but for me they were because he/she was the first to identify the same problem as me. If that isn't constructive, then I don't know what is.

Please Larry... there's bigger fish to fry.

Excuse me, I posted a real observation of a BUG in the Photos app. (Within 5 minutes of using my new iPhone 6s with Photos app, it has invoked a PURPLE DEBUGGING WINDOW) If making an observation like this breaks any of the bylaws stipulated by the Community managers, I apologize. This is how things get fixed. If I have a problem with Apple software and I post to a technical forum so the app developers can see there are people affected by the glitch, then you should be thanking us not scolding us. I and everyone else who posts their observations here want closure. The terminal fix is great, but I want to see it fixed in with Photos 1.2

Are you joking? I am the one that is being violated! I will be using other NON-Apple Apple forums from now on. Thank you for the warm inviting welcome.

Apple may use all available information about you to stop any further infringements. This may include informing relevant third parties such as your employer, school, Internet service provider, or law enforcement authorities of the infringement.

This is getting Kafkaesque.

For the record, I have seen Larry post on several various issues, and almost always acting as some kind of Apple thought police, exacerbating rather than helping people's situations. If I was Apple, I would have something to say about how Larry is frustrating their customers.....
